Hi all,
Whenever I try to do work units for the aids project my computer freaks out. The memory, cpu and harddrive usage goes to 100%. The work unit never completes and with everyhing maxxed out I can't do anything else. I can run the protein folding project without problems. My cpu is 1.1 Gz Celeron, 512 MB ram, 100 Gig harddrive. Anybody know I can get the aids project to run ? |

How do you mean memory and harddrive usage go to 100%?
If you really want to work on the FAAH project your best bet is to migrate to BOINC. That will help us solve future problems for you as well. If you don't do that, then please tell us everything you can about your computer setup, especially any other software you are running at the same time. Let us know what security software (firewall and antivirus) you are running, and run a detailed virus and spyware scan. An issue like this nearly always means there is something seriously wrong with your computer, so if you are not an expert, it won't hurt to get an expert to give it an overhaul. |

Hi shawnh30,
CPU usage should only go to what you have set the throttle to. By default it should max out at 60%. Memory and disk usage should NOT max out. My first suggestion is to reboot and use Task Manager to terminate wcgrid_autodock. This will force a complete reload. Then look over your processes carefully using Task Manager. It is probably time to RUN CHKDSK /F to make sure your disk drive is not cross-linked anywhere. There are a number of diagnostics listed in ;Useful Utilities' at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490 Let us know what is happening. Keep in mind that if things turn frustrating, it is easy to experiment with BOINC as an alternative. Lawrence |

I have noticed that some wu's in FAAH will maxout the cpu but not the memory or the disk usage, no matter what the default throttle setting is. Other wu's will have a smoother(?) cpu usage and stay below the default setting. Something else must be amiss if the whole system is maxing.

With all the projects there may be brief periods when they use 100%. This is explained in the throttle guide. Just opening Task Manager and glancing at the process list is not a reliable way of telling whether the throttle and agent are working properly.

Sgt.Joe, there have been discussions here about widgets, 3rd party monitoring tools and the one's build into Windows e.g.
----------------------------------------If you fire up TaskManager and hit the performance tab, then minimize it to tray for a while, you can later see a graph of the CPU and PageFile load over a longer period. Got it set up as one of these that autostart and minimize when booting my machine. If the icon completely green its full load, if green is low, i know the DC project is idling or stuck, or in process of switching work unit. My start bar does not autohide, so more or less the icon always sits in the corner of my good eye. It's all superfluous writing of course, since u've been using taskmanager already, but sharing might benefit other who get to this thread PS, i've set the TaskManager update sampling to low (Menu, View, Update Frequency! ciao

How do you mean memory and harddrive usage go to 100%? I mean that if I start Task Manager the cpu and pagefile monitors reach 100% An issue like this nearly always means there is something seriously wrong with your computer, so if you are not an expert, it won't hurt to get an expert to give it an overhaul. If there was something seriously wrong with my computer, wouldn't I see other programs/services doing that same thing. This problem only occurs with FAAH. |

Let us know what is happening. Keep in mind that if things turn frustrating, it is easy to experiment with BOINC as an alternative. I tried using BOINC and the same thing happens. As soon FAAH starts processing everyhing hits 100%. As far as other software running, I have Norton Anti-virus and Lavasoft's Adware/Adwatch. |

I'm afraid this is totally normal. The CPU will always go to 100%, since it is being used to the maximum. The UD throttle doesn't kick in straight away, and BOINC has no throttle.
You will see 100% pagefile use if you have little memory and your pagefile is too small. Don't worry, Windows will automatically resize your pagefile. If you have set it to a fixed size, then you will have all sorts of problems. |

Sekerob,
----------------------------------------These were merely observations from watching task manager for far long than I should have. Just curiousity on my part. Even if the cpu maxes on some wu's it only does it for very short periods of time, probably one second or so. It seems to vary from about 30% to 100% , only hitting the 100% level about every 5 seconds or so. It does not cause any problems with other applications. It is just how that particular wu is calculated. Your replies are always interesting and I always learn something.
