Re: Welcome to the “Help Defeat Cancer” project

I
* At least 750 MB RAM (with virtual memory enabled)

So if I have 512MB physical RAM plus a minimum 250 MB swap file I should be able to crunch HDC units? That's what the above statement implies to many people.

Perhaps save everybody some confusion and reword that as follows:

* At least 750 MB physical RAM plus minimum xxx MB virtual memory.

I would like to know the same thing. I have been crunching FA@H workunits with a 128MB RAM pc, but the minimum system requirement is 200MB. It wasn't a very efficient solution, but it worked.
If you require 512MB + 250MB swap, that would be fine for all my machines. As long as they are not paging all day long, because then I will get complaining colleagues! wink

Re: Welcome to the “Help Defeat Cancer” project

750 MB of RAM means just that. Plus have your Virtual Memory enabled. Of course, if you can get the server to send you a work unit even if you have less RAM, then you can run it using lots of paging. The requirement is just intended to keep our members' computers quick aqnd responsive. It would be interesting to hear just what sort of processing requires so much memory.

Re: Welcome to the “Help Defeat Cancer” project

Right. "750MB of RAM" does mean just that. However, "750MB of RAM with swap enabled" means something else to newbies. Would it hurt to word it UNambiguously? Or is there some perverse pleasure to be derived by confusing the newbies? I noticed you resorted to the use of plus in your response. Why not put it in the original and avoid the confusion.?

Re: Welcome to the “Help Defeat Cancer” project

Just an observation.........another project I run, Seasonal Attribution, has a recommended ram requirement of 1 gig.

I am sure more and more projects will be tweaked/introduced that have tougher hardware requirements.

The saving grace here is that there are other less taxing options to run.
I hope the ram requirements for your cancer project don't exclude too many from being able to contribute.

I think I may have picked up my first HDC workunit.

Re: Welcome to the “Help Defeat Cancer” project

Right....we seem to wallow in wordplay again....with or plus.....if WCG is concerned with keeping machines 'responsive' same as the 60% throttle.... if we can get the right wording unambiguous for those, that do not have 'English' as native tongue same as what was used in the WCG Wike of the 'Do Dis Dogether' guys (I'm sure the dutch, german, spanish and italian translations are going to say it proper confused

....meantime i've got again an FAAH that goes round and round from 47.7 to 50.0 percent.....meeting sister sledge.

ciao

any help in the way of a formula for less RAM ? like with 458 RAM, would setting 3 Gbytes virtual memory do the trick ? or is there even a way to know that , or would other factors need to be considered?
