THis heat thing is the critical issue. HOW DO I KNOW IF THE THINGIE (CPU?) IS RUNNING HOT? I'm not going to stick my finger in there to find out!! To my poorly-engineered brain with all the faulty wiring and some burnt-out bulbs, it seems reasonable that if I allow all those electrons to just crowd up and starting pushing on each other at 100 percent (which is what TWO of my Yahoo Widgets tell me is happening most of the time), then to my way of thinking, there more heat generated, the "thingie" will not last as long and I had plans for the Hairy Ape to live with me for five years.
I don't want him dying of heart failure for being over exerted. Jim Liddell |

defenitely needs first introduction to the BOINCorama and Didactlyos likes WCGridorama only.....such a good guy. Signed the Nerdmeister I have not the foggiest idea of what any of that means. This is why I like black boxes with on/off switches. But I'll add that I love your motto and plan to steal it for use by my genetics genealogy group. You have just been robbed. Thank you for your patronage! |

HOW DO I KNOW IF THE THINGIE (CPU?) IS RUNNING HOT? The Useful Utilities thread at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490 has: 1) Motherboard Monitor: http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ Monitors CPU temperature. If the manufacturer does not supply a temperature monitoring program for your board, then see if this program works with your computer. If the temperature is too high, then read http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2683 |

I read that. Thanks for pointing it out again. And that mess of double-talk is what prompted my post. It says do this IF but to NOT do this IF and I don't know how to sort out the IF-YES from the IF-BUT DONT IF.
----------------------------------------AWWAAAAAGGGGHHHH!!!!! By the way--I have another suggestion. I use McAfee Security Center, which is really nifty. It has a case-by-case approval system for software programs to get through the firewall in order to access the Web and send out messages for whatever good reason they want to. Most of my programs need to receive a "server access" status only once as part of the initial installation. Some, like Avast!--which I also use--require a "permit one time" whenever I reboot and, as with this special class to which it belongs, Avast! has to use its Setup program to get started again. I leave it operating at all times, you see. Once that is done (my granting "once time access to its Setup program"), Avast! doesn't require any additional permission from me to do its thing(s). That's fairly cool with me because I reboot probably only once a week after MS has sent me its latest attempt to patch Windows and make it secure. ((I never turn the Hairy Ape off except to install something, and then it immediately goes back on.) The issue I raise here is that WCG Agent operates just like Avast!. WCG Agent requires my granting it access to the Web to upload a finished run each time it has one, and I am not always present when McAfee asks me if WCG Agent is a good guy or a virus trying to get out. There is no way I can tell McAfee that WCG Agent is ALWAYS a good guy and to quit bugging me about it. The result is that you are delayed in getting your completed run back until I tell McAfee everything is cool. The first time this happened, you lost about 10 minutes. Just now, you probably lost about 45 minutes. The first time this happens while I'm asleep, you will have lost up to seven hours--the equvalent of a complete run down the tubes. There is definitely a need to get this item fixed so that McAfee will permanently recognize WCG Agent as a good guy. (I hope all of you can understand my version of IT "techie" talk.) I don't remember reading anything about this issue in the forums before I made my most infamous post that began this sorry thread. And if you aren't the right soul to tell this to, please fwd it to whoever is. Thanks for all the attempted help, Y'all. Jim Liddell He who definitely does not drool--except when unusually excited! McAfee and Avast on the same machine is asking for trouble same as running 2 firewalls on one machine, plus there is the grey area where firewalls and antivirs are starting to have features of each others realm.....conflicts galore.

There are also known issues with McAfee and WCG software. McAfee have not (so far as I know) been cooperative in finding the problem.

McAfee and Avast on the same machine is asking for trouble same as running 2 firewalls on one machine, plus there is the grey area where firewalls and antivirs are starting to have features of each others realm.....conflicts galore. I understand your cautions here. So far I have had no problems. McAfee is my primary firewall, with MS augmenting as their softwares permit. No other firewalls. I back this combo up with Ad-Adware for spyware and adware, Avast! for viruses and trojans (about the same thing I guess) plus the virus protection of McAfree, AVG for a general everything guardianship, CCleaner for manual elective surgery, MS Malware (if it really does anything, which I wonder about, and that, too, is manual election), and I have Rootkit but not yet applying it for that new type of virus. The trick I use to keep everyone happy is to schedule each one to run at a different time and to otherwise monitor my system. And I have some other things that I won't mention here for safety reasons. About $800 overall in extra software just because Windows has holes as delivered to my doorstep in a factory-sealed wrapper. (Hope this doesn't get the post deleted.) They all find different things, you know. I'll add some more response to this matter with the next post just below. Jim Liddell |

There are also known issues with McAfee and WCG software. McAfee have not (so far as I know) been cooperative in finding the problem. That is really a surprising statement to read. McAfee--as fine as it is--is a bit tricky to set up at first, at least that was my experience (Captain Dummy, here!--you know) until I figure out what they are doing with all their various controls and which I could just leave on automatic and which ones I had to get in bed with. I have dealt with McAfee both on the phone and via their "chat" function and found them to be just an utter delight. I heartily recommend McAfee to the entire world. Their service support is just wonderful. That advertisement now in the public's plain view, I wonder if it isn't WCG's place to get in sync with McAfree instead of the other way around. McAfee, after all, has to deal with the entire web industry and WSG doesn't. (Yeah, I know--that question isn't yours to have to deal with and my reply to your courtesy is a bit harsh...and I'm sorry for putting it that way. But being a retired newspaper editor finds me with all the "nice" rubbed away from decades of dealing with abrasive parts of life, which causes me to cut the chase with direct statements---BWWWAAAAHHHHAAAAA, just look at the length of my posts. I am a lying moron, I am.) Which now brings up my last request for insight (and I promise to go use the info above to assess my CPU heat issues, if there are any). I just finished designing a team avatar. It is only 14.7Kb and measures 123Dx542W pixels. (I bet you will eventually have to cut the size of permitted avatars. Some I've some are monsters and that eats your memory.) But anyhow, I filed the baby at ImageShack and attempted all five of their pathlinks and none work. I'm back to straight text. What can I do to get my Rembrant into the forums? Thanks. Jim Liddell (The guy has to run out of questions someday!!!) |

WOW!! Guess what. The problem--whatever it was--went away. WCG now is recognized by McAfee and is getting out onto the Web under its own power without my having to do anything.
(I still have a question about SigBanners (avatars?) and how to get them into the system. The question is just above this updated info.) Jim Liddell "Just a-gettin' it!" |
