smile Several Suggestions from a definitely non-Geek PC User

Hi, All--

I have read through most of the forums or at least scanned through them with specific questions in mind that I don't see answer to. So, here are my suggestions.

1. Automate your add-ons.

I do not understand a lot of the "techie" talk I see in the forums although I see plenty of warnings about trying this or that under certain conditions that may as well be construction steps for an electron microscope as far as I'm concerned.

Here's what I want to do and will not attempt, given present posted details.

a. install software to monitor my cpu heat and auto-adjust to my choice of five general settings or as an option for the geeky, to a specific level of usage. I simply want to download, install and run. That's it. The software will have to examine my cpu for maker and type and decide on its own what software I need.

b. I wanted to increase my "memory". Your ideal standard shows 5 gig of memory and I have .98 gig. I have nearly 100 gig of HD not committed. If you are not referring to RAM here, I want to increase my memory to your "standard". What do I do?

2. (And perhaps related to above) Design a Yahoo Widget to do the above monitoring and put in their site.

I have nearly 40 of the Yahoo Widgets installed and running at all times. If you are not familiar with these really nice devices, go to Yahoo.Com and look up their Widgets site and then spend a few hours prowling through the nearly 3000 Widgets they have. You will particularly want to look at the Geek and Tools categories.

A few good Widgets will afford you the opportunity to automate some or all of these processes and downloads and geeky-charts that you presently are relying on to tell us idiots what to do to get to home port.

A few good Widgets will also publicize World Community in one of the Web's hot spots for visiting. I go there about once a week just to see what new Widgets have been added. YEAH--there's some stuff that is trash for most people, like a particular radio station in Serbia or the main intersection cam in Brisbane or Sydney or London but there's also some real jewels.

3. INCREASE YOUR TYPE SIZE IN THE FORUMS--FOR GOSH SAKES!!!

I am nearly blind from reading this ultra-wee type size you use. PLEASE go up several levels so I can read it. I am sure there are hundreds more like me in the same boat.

That's it. I am verbose. I know it. I accept it. I hope you will.

DANG!!! I told you I wasn't a geek--didn't I? In my first post, I used "memory"! I should have used "storage". I guess that refers to cache. I dunno. Somebody out there does.

That's what I want to increase to 5 gig so I meet all your minimum standards (since I exceed several just for being alive).

Thanks

You answered yourself. That's a start, I guess.

Dynamic heat software monitoring really isn't needed since the level remains rather constant. The software as originally designed runs the computer at 100%. If that's too hot, throttle it down to some number that is satisfactory and leave it there.

If you color your messages, the type size is automatically increased. I don't have as much control on this thing as on phpBB systems, but that's a start.

Let's try color black

Re: Several Suggestions from a definitely non-Geek PC User

You're over-complicating things. Relax, you can ignore the babblings of the technocrats here. The defaults will handle things just fine.

The grid software does examine your CPU, and won't overload a low powered computer. You don't need to worry about the throttle, either. The default is safe and won't overheat your computer.

You don't need to increase the storage. The "standard" shown in the program is totally arbitrary. WCG actually only uses a fraction of the space allocated. If you do want to increase this allowance (there's really no need) then you can do it using your device profile.

I can't repeat this enough: you don't need to do anything, the defaults will handle everything.

I hear you about the font size. Making the website fully accessible is a priority for WCG, and I'll add this item to the list of things to keep bugging them about.

Yahoo widgets look most horrible. You will never need to download additional stuff to get WCG running. You need the client, and that's it.

3. INCREASE YOUR TYPE SIZE IN THE FORUMS--FOR GOSH SAKES!!!

On yor browser bar, click on 'View' - 'Text Size'. This is standard in both Internet Explorer and Firefox. I used to use a larger type until I got some reading glasses. biggrin

It's not strange at all. The forums simply use a fixed size, instead of using relative units. If you go source diving, you will find the font size is set to 11 pixels. This is totally moronic; font size can be specified as a percentage, points, ems, cms, even inches. Percentages should scale in IE when the browser requests a larger or smaller than normal font size. The other units (real world units) respect the monitor pixels/inch property. Firefox will scale anything.

biggrin Re: Several Suggestions from a definitely non-Geek PC User

Hi, I tried that thingie about type size. I tried it. It had no effect. Sorry. It rarely does. I think I have something blocking its use. (And blacking my messages doesn't help much. It's the other guys here that give me the problems.) But all this is no big deal if default takes care of everything--which I accept as true in principle but still have my private reservations. I have Widget meters, you see, and THEY have redline at 100 percent which I have reset to 85 and as a custom turn off less needed processes when the Hairy Ape gets a heartbeat above 85 percent. (This monkey cost me some coins, folks!!!)

Actually, this msg is responding to all of the above very helpful replies (which one guy thought enough of my concern to give me some double-talk that I can't make heads nor tails of--DUH!!!! (You are dealing with a moron, here, folks. I'm like the guy in the Army who just got issued his rifle and a box of ammo. He is one dangerous dude until somebody trains him the proper way to do it. And I am training-resistant. I just want a black box with an on-off switch.)

And in closing this worthless tirade, I add that the beauty of a Widget depends on the designer. I love my meter Widgets. They make me think I know something about all this stuff.

Jim Liddell (Who even noticed that he misspelled his own name in one of his posts.)

Don't worry. I'm not going away. The Hairy Ape will continue to crunch them data thingies you give me.
