Oh – if anyone has been there and has any tips or recommendations, I’d love to hear them. My wife has been taking the weeyins for the last 4 years, each year threatening me with dire consequences if I don't go along too. The only reason I managed to avoid it last year was a heart attack   Still, I'm here to tell the tale - sadly though I'm now out of excuses  I would recommend you take plenty of spare batteries (re-chargeables are even better) for your camera - it's always dark that far north so you'll need a LOT of flash! Oouch!? MI at Christmas? It's always the way - please to see that you are still crunchin! I am on rechargables now, having played the 'where can I buy 3 v batteries for my camera' game. Bought 512M memory cards in Australia for a good price, too. I remember when a 32M flash card cost most of your holiday spending money!! |

Oh - don't bother recommending that I book for Christmas earlier than August next time... Uh, the current or the year ahead? Well, you can try to change your flight plans (ever consider Tallinn, Estonia? history buffs would enjoy the very well preserved city, especially remarkable given the history since) or you can go the adventurous route and go with no hotel booked. I once was met by a fellow at the German-Austrian border just outside Salzburg who offered a room in his pension. He had this rather large mountain (Untersburg I believe) that came straight down (literally) into his backyard. It was a bargain even without the scenery and the "continental" breakfast (more like an all you can eat Sunday brunch). Avoid the hotels and go native. Be sure to have a way to get to another nearby city or carry a large tent  Oh, and if you try doing this again in the future, book into the ice hotel. BTW, watch out for the hind legs on the reindeer too! When I was a bit younger I used to love to wing it. Bit harder with the family! Mind you, I have just secured a brilliant cabin in a sports complex next to the ski resport at a fraction of the price of a comparable tour. Really, really pleased! We'd love to have a night in an ice hotel - is there one near Rovaniemi? I cant see anything on the net. What I have discovered is a day trip in an ice breaker (the only 'tourist' one in existance, apparently). Its about a half days drive away. Very tempting. |

Matt, there should be an ice hotel in Rovaniemi (in the winter of course
---------------------------------------- ). Ice bars and hotels are not uncommon in the winter. Not sure how or who to contact though. If nothing comes up on the web, a good tactic is to invest in a phone call. The local Chamber of Commerce works well for finding things in the US. A big ski town like that should have some sort of tourist bureau or such. If they can't make the reservation for you, they would hopefully be able to point you to the right contact. |
