Congrats to Windlowers & Edward McCoy on your recent milestones. I hope everyone has had a good Sunday. We've been a little on the warm side. At 5:27pm the heat index is 102 F. Keep on crunching.

Hi all - hope everyone is well, happy and crunching.
We are just finishing a bank holiday (long weekend) here which has been, as tradition dictates, a little on the wet side! Still, managed to get out on the bike in the park and even cut the lawn. One thing I did do was to book a 6-night break in Lapland for Christmas. It will be our first real white Christmas ever and I have been organising it myself so we can have more of an adventure itinerary – there are lots of ‘Santa tours’ for younger families on offer, but my kids are too old to believe (unlike their Dad ).Well – this will all happen in theory at least. Guess who paid for the air travel, which was (self-edited for profanity) expensive , only to find that there are no rooms available at our destination (Rovaniemi - the Capital of Lapland). Can you believe it? Now I discover the place has been booked solid for about a year Trying not to panic and have put a couple of local companies onto the search for me, as there are only so many Finnish hotels I can ring... Oh well – its in the lap of the gods and worst case – we make the Helsinki stopover last a little longer! Oh – if anyone has been there and has any tips or recommendations, I’d love to hear them. |

Oh - don't bother recommending that I book for Christmas earlier than August next time...

Oh – if anyone has been there and has any tips or recommendations, I’d love to hear them. My wife has been taking the weeyins for the last 4 years, each year threatening me with dire consequences if I don't go along too. The only reason I managed to avoid it last year was a heart attack Still, I'm here to tell the tale - sadly though I'm now out of excuses I would recommend you take plenty of spare batteries (re-chargeables are even better) for your camera - it's always dark that far north so you'll need a LOT of flash! |

Jim, we may be getting some next week if Ernesto starts heading more northerly. If not, I know Texas can use some rain too. At least the worst of the heat seems to have broken. Soon enough Al, you'll be dealing with wind chills and the cold ![]() Hopefully, I'll hit my first 100K MOT points by month end and stay on track to make the 200K sometime around turkey day. Thanks Matt for letting me know winters on the way.lol Just 5 more years of this and I'm heading south. I've had enough snow and enough humid summers to last me a lifetime. Going to move to Georgia when the kids finish up with High School. My youngest only has 5 more years of school and then I can say goodbye to the cold winters and hot humid summers. |

Oh - don't bother recommending that I book for Christmas earlier than August next time... Uh, the current or the year ahead? Well, you can try to change your flight plans (ever consider Tallinn, Estonia? history buffs would enjoy the very well preserved city, especially remarkable given the history since) or you can go the adventurous route and go with no hotel booked. I once was met by a fellow at the German-Austrian border just outside Salzburg who offered a room in his pension. He had this rather large mountain (Untersburg I believe) that came straight down (literally) into his backyard. It was a bargain even without the scenery and the "continental" breakfast (more like an all you can eat Sunday brunch). Avoid the hotels and go native. Be sure to have a way to get to another nearby city or carry a large tent ![]() Oh, and if you try doing this again in the future, book into the ice hotel. BTW, watch out for the hind legs on the reindeer too! ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by keithhenry at Aug 28, 2006 10:31:10 PM] |

Come on down Al! You can enjoy the hurricane remnants, the occasional droughts, tornadoes, ice storms, and heat waves in the winter.

Georgia is hot & humid in the Summer, and in the Fall & sometimes in the Spring. Sorry ![]() |
