Re: 24 hours and 0% completion?

Never in the 600 WCG WU's or so i've processed have i seen 15 even 24 hours without the Graph screen not progressing a tenth of a percent from zero.....some 'opinions' were voiced on this forum that normally a segment should time out after a certain number of attempts as it would not converge and move on with the next segment. If 24hours plus is a length of time acceptable not to progress 0.1% in the graph screen, i think WCG Tech needs to be very clear on that towards the crunchers.

I'm doing as noted, for the heck of it, a HPF2 at the moment on UD agent and it does progress 0.1% steps at the time @ lengty intervals, whilst the status screen progress bar remains frozen until a segment is completed. This 0.1% progress indication in the graph screen is re-assuring for the UD users.

I saw within a recent single thread within 2 responses 2 180 degree advises coming from WCG techs....i'm not stating 'bad advise' if in fact to quote
I know it's confusing not seeing the percent increase after a long while.
. Let's clarify and move on.

thx

Re: 24 hours and 0% completion?

I have the same trouble whit this phase 2, in the score page the protein moves but there's no score value -solvation, res-res pair, h-bonds- . The cpu load is always high, as a normal unit was working.
Do I have to wait or to get a new unit? how can I do that? confused
thanks

Re: 24 hours and 0% completion?

If the graphics are moving then everything is OK but the scores should update eventually. If the graphics have stopped or the scores have not updated by the time you read this then please tell us your CPU speed, RAM, disk capacity, operating system, etc. so we have a better idea how to help. How long has it been running without score updates? The more details you provide the faster we can help.

ok, my pc has a athlon64 3400+ cpu, 512mb ram 60gb hdd, I use windows xp sp2. Since I joined here, a unit never behaved in this way,
after 12hours no score appears on the score page. Everytime I close and re-open the program, the unit begin his work from the beginning but in a few minutes the score fields become empty. I can monitorate the cpu and os load, they are at the usual level, with a "normal" unit.

Could be easier to re-install te grid program (so I'll get a new unit) ?

Reinstalling generally doesn't delete active work units.

To terminate the work unit, go into the Task Manager and find the 'wcg_hpf2_rosetta.exe' process. Select it and click the 'End Process' button.

It is normal behavio(u)r for the program to start at the beginning each time it is restarted unless it has run far enough to reach a checkpoint. Most of us run 24/7 to minimize this problem and do not turn off the program at all.

BOINC is currently version 5.4.9. The next version 5.6 will have the ability to close or switch projects after reaching a checkpoint.

If you still have HPF2 version 5.06 it does have problems with getting stuck at 0. New HPF2 version 5.07 should have fixed that.

Just to clarify what retsof said, 5.4.9 already has the ability to close or switch projects after reaching a checkpoint.

I think what retsof meant to say is that 5.6 will wait for a check point to be reached before closing or switching projects.

Re: 24 hours and 0% completion?

Posted the below excerpt before on this forum

FROM BOINC OFFICIAL WEBSITE
June 15, 2006
BOINC's CPU scheduler has become smarter: it now waits until an application has checkpointed to preempt it and remove it from memory. This can save significant CPU time, especially on multiprocessors. Technical details are here. The new scheduler is in the development version of BOINC, and will appear in the 5.6 release. Volunteer developer John McLeod VII was the driving force behind the new scheduler.

I haven't found the button for that if it does. I was able to extend the number of hours before switching, but that's about it. Hopefully a checkpoint will be included in there somewhere, but not necessarily at the end. Everything after the checkpoint is still gon'na be wasted.

Re: 24 hours and 0% completion?

Just highlight a project and click the Suspend button. It will close the WU in progress and switch to another project if you have one attached.

I think you already know that. I clarified your earlier comment because the way it is worded might lead a newbie to believe that the WU cannot be closed after a checkpoint is reached. You and I know that's a ridculous interpretation of your otherwise sound advice but when you're a newbie it might just make sense.

I don't know what Sekerob's point is. He seems awfully cranky over something. Let's pester him for a while. Says he has skin and memory of an elephant. Bet he smells like one too tongue
