Morning Keith
----------------------------------------To quote Tony Hancock from the Radio Ham (again )"There's nothing like a DS19/87B Radio Valve Look at you, look at you, look at you A triumph of technological engineering A Work of Art They can keep their Sistene Chapel Give me the insides of a Wireless Set any day" It's modern day equivalent would be a 64 Bit Dual Core Athlon and the insides of a PC any day After all it was May day yesterday "What's he on about that was weeks ago it's the middle of June" "Serves him right he shouldn't be out in a boat at this time of night" [Apologies to all ye young Whippersnapers out there, a brief reminisce by us old timers] Normal Service is resumed ![]() |

----------------------------------------btw I did have the callsign G6XNF and as a kid I had a 5 element Yagi attached to the top of my mum's washing line pole. When mum hung up the washing I'd lose the signal as the pole rotated I had a FT290R until some friendly burgler took it one day (and my rucksack to put all the swag in )As you can now see I'm a long time, dyed in the wool, Geek Now I have "Friends all over the World" through the Internet and the WCG My Amateur Radio days brought me out of my shell and it took some courage to broadcast to the world aged around 17 (I think) (A Big Up to the Radio Amateur Team http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=J65RSMBR9N1) Now you can see how I ended up in Telecoms. Maybe that's why the idea of Podcasting holds such appeal to me Waffling again (Must let go of the PTT button one day) Have a great day and keep crunching Dave ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by David Autumns at May 2, 2006 6:54:30 AM] |

I just had a small shortwave set I bought as a kit. My antenna was about 75 feet of ordinary wire laid out around the perimeter of my room (many decades ago). My pride was the QSL from Radio Austraila for a 5KW signal (it may have been 5W as I wasn't totally sure I'd got enough valid info). It was the old ear to the speaker with the door shut time and the volume way up. I had to chuckle at some of the promotionals/propaganda I got. I used to get some rather artistic mags from Bejing. Moscow was rather bland. Surprisingly, it was Havana that really laid it on. Quite vitrolic. I'm willing to bet that the CIA *still* has a file on me ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by keithhenry at May 12, 2006 1:24:47 AM] |

Reached 287th briefly treading water at 288th
----------------------------------------Hi Keith My most interesting message I received was from the Spaceship Columbia when they had an astronaut broadcasting in the 2 Metre Band. He called "This is W5LFL on the space ship Columbia calling England Ireland and the rest of Europe" there was no way to talk back as the uplink was swamped by thousands. I took my crackly recording to the 6th Form and played it on the the 6th Form Common Room's Cassette deck going "Did you hear that" none of them could make it out and I was a laughing stock. You need a good ear. I've just googled W5LFL and I was right on the money after all of these years (I know some won't believe I wrote it in this order) http://hamgallery.com/qsl/Interesting/w5lfl.htm Dave ![]() |
