WCG goes Agent Paused after running 1 WU, sometimes it will run for several (or several days), but lately down to 1. Closing/opening usually does not work (but sometimes does); logging off XP user and logging back on XP user will definitetly allow WCG to start up again. I am suspecting XP is getting its stack plugged up somewhere, as generally IE won't communicate either when WCG stops running. Been poking at this for months now, getting tired of manually restarting WCG. All those P4 2.8GHz cycles being wasted.... XP Pro latest patches, ZoneAlarmPro (with holes pokes in it for WCG), Symantec antivirus, IE no proxy WCG trusted, satellite link (same symptoms on ADSL), connected through WRT54G router shared with several Linux boxes and NetGear switch, the Linux boxes keep on running fine so the raw connectivity is not an issue. Can ping router and modem from XP but not iNet when WCG goes Agent Paused. I searched (tried to search) the past posts for something like these symptoms, but could not find anything-- but there are so many Agent Paused instances, could very well have missed the one I wanted.... |

which agent ? UD or boinc? is it worth trying the other agent? i had huge problems once with my ud agent , for months i looked for the problem, i was with the "other: grid job at the time, could never do proteome but could do the easier cancer unit thing.. i thought is was laack of disk space, i went out and bought nort disk partition, in the end no diff it was a "gscatserver.exe" or something prog running in the background that took higher pririty and essentially locked me out, i discovered it in the task manager windows hogging resources and doing nuthin helpful.. this prob not relevant esp if yours is linux, so far on my other linux box i never (touch wood) had a problem) .. let us know how u progress, hopefully some clever dudes will help you bfn

Hello RoncalliHocker,
I had a similar problem once on one computer with Zone Alarm when it was blocking a ?DNS? message to my router. Eventually the link to my router would time out. Another computer had a different problem (not at all like yours) because of a missing system file that an infection had compromised. I recently fixed that by running the System File Checker program, comparing my system files against the Windows OS CDROM and checking for updates. To do this, I ran sfc /scanonce and rebooted. Also, BelArc Advisor (see Useful Utilities at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490 ) does a less powerful system check to ensure all Microsoft updates have been applied. I am running UD (did not know about BOINC although I have seen references to it).
I'll look at ZL (other suggestion) tonight since I don't think this is UD specific, as other tasks sometimes can't communicate at the same time-- could be induced by UD, but seems unlikely. Tks. |

that's odd, 1 of my 3 computers does that too. every few days it makes me log out and log back in.
----------------------------------------it is a cheap 'e-machine' brand so i thought that was the problem. it is 1.7 Ghz with 256mb RAM, AMD Athlon XP2100+, fully updated Windows XP Home, Avasti anti-virus. i never understood that but it is not a big deal to me. Hi RoncalliHocker,
One thing to try (to avoid having to log off): In "Network Connections", select your net adapter and chose "Repair". And as a workaround, you may want to consider switching to BOINC merely so that you can have work queued up, so you will still be crunching if the network connection freezes up again. |

Well, naturally after my last post UD ran for a week.... and after that my Linux email machine lost its MOBO and had to be replaced etc....
Finally got back to experimenting whenever UD would stop. Remember, at the same time IE would also fail (unable to find websites). I found that I could ping an IP address such as 129.33.89.134 but could not ping (DNS resolve) server.worldcommunitygrid.org (the DN for the preceding IP address). The router lights don't flicker, leading me to believe that the XP machine is not emitting the DNS request. As a bandaid I set hosts to resolve the DN:IP to see if that would work by bypassing the DNS, but the suggestion about ZA dropping DNS requests looks promising. Can I have a hint about what to look for, or is this just opening a port (53?) sort of thing? Thanks. |

Hello RoncalliHocker,
I looked up my posts on the DC Zone about this problem: http://forum.thedczone.com/index.php?topic=503.msg34535#msg34535 It was a UDP packet on port 53 sent by svchost.exe to my router. Zone Alarm blocked it until I told Zone Alarm to TRUST my router. Here are the relevant posts. I think I have the same problem as vaio on my second computer. I got rid of Symantec and substituted ZoneAlarm firewall and AVG Antivirus, then I upgraded to Firefox 1.5. On my first computer I upgraded to Firefox 1.5. My second computer loses Internet access after sitting unused for a while, until I reboot. I can't upload results without a reboot. But the connection says everything is fine. Gr-r-r-r. Naturally, everything used to be OK. Anybody else getting this problem after upgrading to Firefox 1.5? Added: I used Registry Mechanic on my second computer. No joy. I am playing with Zone Alarm. Ordinarily I just assume that firewalls know more than I do and let them alone. Generic 32 etc. on my second computer tries to send a UDP packet to my router every once in a while. After some fiddling, I have told Zone Alarm to TRUST my router. I hope this does not lead to a successful revolt against the humans. Probably this will be a blind alley, like everything else I have tried. But I thought that I would let you know that I am continuing to experiment. That seems to have done it. Now that I have configured Zone Alarm to TRUST my router, it no longer blocks svchost.exe on my second computer when it tries to send a UDP packet out port 53 to my router, and I have always-on internet access again. I set up my router from my first computer, so anything necessary to tell my McAfee firewall about my router was probably done then. If I turn out to have been too optimistic, I'll post again. Otherwise - - it's problem solved. Yippee!! Hope this helps, Lawrence |

Thanks.
So far this seems to be working, although it has only been an hour or so. The hosts bypass was working before (IE was hung up though since DN lookup is needed for pretty much any practical use of IE on the WWW). I also put my broadband modem into the trusted zone. At this rate, the rise of the machines is only a matter of time! |

Great!
I seem to recall that when I Googled the protocol message being sent, I found something about a DNS table entry that would time out eventually if the message was blocked too long. I was very irritated that Zone Alarm did not have a pop-up message asking me to allow commo with my local equipment. Lawrence |
