Re: We have the Website Partially Live Guys!

You Sir! Will never score any points in the art of diplomacy
Or for that matter, ingratiate your self with members of these Forums, if you continue to critique people’s efforts in such an abrasive manner
My request for comments were directed towards MOT members, as they are the primary reason for the website being set up in the first place

100% Inaccessible: If it is 100% inaccessible, I fail to see how you managed to view it and comment on it in the first place
Alternatively you may want to consider using a different browser, if you are having such a major problem viewing it

Blind: I was not aware you was blind, however I will attempt to install a brail version for you

Small Screens: It is a work in progress and not set in stone

PDA Users!: You mean that 0.000000000000000001% of internet users that use PDA’s to browse, will become upset when viewing our home page

It is not a web page: What is it then, smart alec?

When you consider becoming a member of MOT, your comments might count for something
Try putting your money where your mouth is and let's see you do better

You have a nice day now

Hey Graham listen to the guy he's trying to help he's from a group/team called "User Friendly" which I'm sure are interested in GUI design and web page interactivity.

He has a point it won't fit in even at 1024*768 and not everyone has a huge monitor for graphics creation and viewing like yourself

Also it isn't a web page in the true sense it is an image map none of the buttons move and there isn't a hyperlink in sight. It won't get the attention of the search engines that you are looking for.

The image on the front page is 190K bytes which with a 56K Modem will take over 30 seconds to load the front page on a good day (This is the inaccessable bit)

he did credit it on a thing of beauty

Dave peace

David
May I stress that it is a work in progress and a lot still needs to be done
You will note that there is minimal content, as it is still being tested
It was put up to give our members a view and feel of the possible appearance
The front page image had already been reduced in width as well as being
compressed to reduce the file size, before Didactylos's comments

However, Spikey_Richie is away until Monday afternoon and cannot access it to install the new image
Please save your comments until we announce that it is finished
Then your praise or criticisms may be more meaningful, as currently they are pre-emptive

Re: We have the Website Partially Live Guys!

Graham, if I didn't know better, I'd say you're a Southerner, not a Brit! laughing I do love the image. Very artistic. Plus I can relate to how you feel. You have a lot invested in both the website and the team so criticism can be a bit harder to take. If the website is really just for the team members, what are we going to do when we get a member that's visually impaired? There's more to that than being blind too. You lose my glasses and I can't see anything in focus beyond about 8 inches in front of my face.

Unfortunately too, a lot of folks still rely on dial-up access to the net. Graphic-intensive web sites can be quite discouraging to try to load. That's all I had at home until a couple of years ago myself - though I did have the option of high speed access thru my sattelite service. They were overly expensive and I knew a couple of folks that had tried it and never were able to get it to work.

Also, with respect to attracting new team members, we will want to focus on folks that are not yet part of WCG and attact them to both. Our website is the most likely vehicle for that so making it as easy as we can for them to use will be a big influence on their decision.

I think though that we can adapt fairly easily. After all, we certainly don't want the work to this point to go to waste! Perhaps the first button (left to right, top down) that you find is one that will take you to a text only version of sorts. I know a lots of our links go to other non-text sites but maybe something along those lines is possible. Maybe we could also keep the current image but break it in to separate frames so that you don't have to wait for the whole page to load for it to be usable.

With WCG, we deal with users from all over the world. The diversity of differences is both a great opportunity and a real challenge. One person's bluntness is another's refreshing honesty. It's all a difference of perspective.

Re: We have the Website Partially Live Guys!

Nicely stated Keith and I like the points you have raised.

I am sure the end result will be a credit to us all - by that I mean the team and WCG.

Its nice to see the interest in our web site already - may it long continue!

biggrin You have a nice day now

I wasn't expecting to be flamed! My apologies if you don't like what I have to say, but on my crusade to clean up the web one site at a time, I aim to provide constructive negative criticism, as well as praise where it is due. If it's online, then it's fair game.

My points are valid. It disturbs me that you don't even seem to know what I'm talking about.

I am not blind, but many, many web users are visually impaired, to a greater or lesser degree. For someone like me, with merely poor eyesight, and a need for corrective lenses, the only concession web designers need make is to ensure that text will resize if I want to enlarge it. People with more severe problems use a screen reader. This is an assistive technology that allows them to navigate a site by describing it verbally. A good site will be as easy to use with a screen reader as if you were reading it with your eyes. This ideal is hard to attain, but your site fails totally. There isn't a single word of descriptive text, apart from the page title.

As for size, I (and the W3C) expect sites to adapt to the size of my screen, or cater for the lowest common denominator. I have a fairly large screen, but even so, it didn't fit. This would be fine if there was nothing lost over on the right hand side, but there were a couple of hotspots floating out there somewhere.

And PDA users: you underestimate, my friend. I use a PDA to browse, frequently. The WCG site is a b**** to use, but it is usable. Your site is not. And I'm not alone; I know (just off the top of my head) four other people who use PDAs to browse. You don't need to provide the same level of content (you can provide alternate content, both for PDAs and screen readers), but a good website won't need any changes at all.

And how do I know it isn't a web page? Well, it consists of a single image, but the html contains 35 errors! See them for yourself: validator results. Of course, you fail every single accessibility requirement, as well.

Sure, it's a work in progress. The whole web is a work in progress. I hope you will take the time to read my comments, learn about accessibility, and make your new site as good as it looks.

(I hardly need add: all my sites are fully accessible, if a little utilitarian.)

I can give you more specific advice if you want it, or feel free to drop by UserFriendly.Org (your site in its current form may cause a few of the more uptight people to have heartattacks, but they'll get over it).

Finally, please don't take my criticism personally. There was a time in everyone's life when they didn't know how to create a good web page. Of course, in the early days, nobody could! But now we can. :-D

Valid or not, why would I even be interested
I'm not building the website, so stop wasting your breath
You are preaching your self induldent rhetoric to the wrong person
Now please go and take care of your own team and we will take care of ours
