..............well people, i just found out that that indeed is true - i was whining about the troubles i'm having with my current unit on a recent post and another community member just informed me that they have the same unit working away on their pc ................so there's some proof that this theory is true :-)

open the 'explorer' window - click on your c: drive icon - click on the 'programs' directory - then on the 'World Community Grid' directory - amongst the files you'll see an .exe icon (white square with blue strip on top) with the file title ud_12345.exe - those 5 digits are the number of the unit that is being executed on your pc at the moment - OF COURSE I DEDUCED FROM READING ADVICE IN THIS FORUM AND APPLYING MY OWN THOUGHT PROCESSES TO IT - when my unit in process kept aborting, i exited from wcg, went to this file and deleted it, relaunched wcg and it downloaded a new unit (which oddly enough has the same unit number), which seems to be working away just fine now............after 9.5 hours i'm at 12% and holding!

I shall make a distinction...

The pdb file contains protein structural data - ie positioning and order of the peptide being processed. The pdb.org site is a protein database for already structually identified proteins...WCG does not store these on the pdb site...however may use them for cross referencing.

The UD_xxxxx contains work unit data - although I dont know exactly what it contains.

The UD_687 is also common among all agents.

Rosetta_wcg.out file within the subfolder UD_21380.dir is the resultant data from the number crunching. This file undergoes some post processing before it is sent back... maybe in the form of the UD_xxxxx file - this is speculative however.

According to very careful reading of the above posts, it appears that this is how the Work Units are named:

04aj150080.pdb


It is located in this directory on your harddrive: "WorldCommunityGrid"
and under a subdirectory of something such as "ud_46113_0.dir" (perhaps with different numbers)

It may be possible that they have duplicate units assigned under different identifiers for tracking purposes.

It would seem unlikely that they would publish the results as they come in, because they may later either need (or want) to do additional test runs.

I have yet to get an answer on how many times they plan on processing each Work Unit.

The reasons may be diverse. One potential circumstance I could envision is a possibility that they find an error and thus would have forced them to take back all the results they would have otherwised published.
Another circumstance would be lack of new projects, in which they would likely just run the Work Units through more times than necessary as a measure of keeping public interest. If the grid dies for a few weeks it will take a massive hit on its user base.
