Combo vaccine reduces risk of HIV infection, researchers say
In what is being called the world's largest HIV vaccine trial ever, researchers found that people who received a series of inoculations of a prime vaccine and booster vaccine were 31 percent less likely to get HIV, compared with those on a placebo.....

Good news on the face of it, but...

It's only good against 1 strain of the virus and they admit that the mubers where so small that people shouldn't read too much into them as the positive results could have been nothing more than chance occurances.

They need to do this on a much much wider trial before they can claim a possible vaccine (leads me to wonder why they outted the news when they are so Unsure of the results?? Knowing how the media are with taking the news, turning it around and then running with it, it leads to false hope)..

Off Topic a bit... I was wondering somthing similar as well, but to open that statement up a bit...

Does anyone know if WCG (or any other such Grid), has EVER been mentioned in regards to a possible and/or significant medical breakthrough??

Only reason I was asking is that, I was wondering if they might deliberatley withhold such information in fear that people's Financial Donations to related charity's might be reduced if said people then perceive that medical breakthroughs are coming from our PC's and not from their donations??

If that makes sense??

Or have I over done it a bit on the coffee blushing

Encouraging results for Swedish HIV vaccine
Published: 19 Oct 09 08:19 CET

A Swedish HIV vaccine, Hivis, has shown the best preliminary results the world has seen so far, according to experts. [...] The new Phase II study, which analyzed the vaccine’s effects on people’s immune systems, is to be presented at an AIDS vaccine conference in Paris on Monday.

The healthy test subjects in Tanzania who received Hivis developed specific immune cells which destroy HIV-infected cells in the body, as well as anti-bodies to fight the HIV virus strain included in the vaccine.

“It’s really an unexpected result. The vaccine is safe and it creates an immune defence,” professor Britta Wahren, a virologist at Karolinska Institutet, and one of the researchers behind the study, told the newspaper.

The results indicate the Swedish vaccine may even provide better protection than a promising Thai vaccine unveiled on September 24th.

"We hope that our vaccine could increase protection to 50 percent," Wahren told AFP.

The vaccine in Thailand tested by Thai and US researchers cuts the risk of HIV infection by a third, an achievement described by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a "significant scientific advance."

"Our vaccine includes more strains of the virus -- from Europe, Africa, the US and Asia -- and therefore provides a broader protection," Wahren said.

The Swedish vaccine was tested on 60 healthy policemen in Tanzania in what is called a Phase II study [...] The Phase II study, which has yet to be published in a scientific journal, was carried out in cooperation with researchers in the United States and Tanzania and cost around 35 million kronor ($5 million).

The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) contributed 9 million kronor, while the European Union provided the remainder of the funding, according to DN.
