Good Afternoon Team There is something real fishy going on in the Autumns household. Aint that a fact? I'm getting a bit worried about DA. He's started writing about some bloke called Pete, but he spells it Peat. With a surname like Moss, I'm glad my first name isn't Pete!! |

Dave --
I know you have several felines around the house. What's their take on the aquarium? |

Bad news just tested the water from the tap and it's
----------------------------------------pH 7.6 KH 100mg GH 285mg NO2 0 NO3 50mg Not lovely soft and acidic as most of the Amazon (not the .com the river ) I've taken Gremlin2's advice and added the Blackwater Extract. Waiting for the filter to give it a stir and then it's test again. It's a bit like homebrewing Dave. They say fishkeeping is the wrong name for it. It's really waterkeeping and the fish come along for the ride |

It's really waterkeeping and the fish come along for the ride Dave -- With the water analysis, it does sound a lot like a forum topic on one of the homebrewing forums I participate in. There are some homebrewers who will go so far as to use distilled water to which they will add minerals just to emulate the water used in brewing certain beer styles around the world. The Blackwater Extract sounds like a malt extract one might use for a very dark stout -- LOL. |

The Blackwater extract has brought it down to pH 7.2
----------------------------------------everything else is the same but the coloured test strip reckons I'm pregnant I'm hoping you would keep an eye out for the cats for me |

Man, that water's hard and raw, and it's high for just about everything else. My advice, add a chunk of bogwood anyway to bring down the Ph level, and check it again in a week. Don't forget that the tank has been set up only a few days, and it can take a couple of weeks to get the water as you'll need it.
----------------------------------------Are you using anything to help pre-mature the filter? You can get special stuff from the aquarist to help build up the friendly bacteria in the filter. As you use undergravel filtration, try sticking it on top of the water and air outlet tube to get the bacteria circulating. It can mature your filtration system in just a few days. Another remedy is to 'feed' the existing friendly bacteria with a few flakes of fish food, but it takes longer. If you use the latter method, only do it once or the Nitrate level will shoot up. Once the friendlies have a foothold, they should start eating up the Nitrates etc in short order. Just a thought DA. Do you have the heater running yet? Most bacteria multiply faster in warm environment. You're right about it being more a matter of waterkeeping than fish keeping. If the water's right, fish will thrive in it.
