The Seahawks never let Carolina get into the game.
![]() So, the Superbowl on February 5 in Detroit will be between the AFC Champion Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks. |

Just joined the team (I think) and wanted to say howdy. I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to computers, so if I ever ask a really dumb question, please excuse me. I have had one pc going on the grid for about a week and have 2 more that I'll be adding in the near future. I do have a couple of questions about limiting the processor usage on the machines and also about how to hook the other ones up to the grid. IF anyone out there has the time and patience to either tell me which area to go to for answers, or to help me themselves thru e-mail or yahoo chat, I would appreciate it. I have a personal reason for trying to help with this, so I am very excited about being to help in my own small way.
Thanks Mac586 (Ron) |

![]() .................A BIG ”My Online Team” WELCOME.................![]() .......................to our newest team member! ......................![]() ................................... Mac386 ................................![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hi Ron -- Welcome to the team! You have come to the right team for answers! As our team captain, Dave Autumns likes to say, we are "The best supported team on the World Community Grid." You asked about limiting processor usage. I would first ask why you feel that you need to do this. Most personal computers (other than laptops) are designed to be able to run at 100% continuously as long as you take care to keep the fans and heatsinks clean (I use a can of Dust-off to blow mine clean occasionally). The software that we run for the World Community Grid runs at the lowest priority level possible (that of the idle task). The grid software will yield to any other task that needs resources always. I have been running my two pc's here at home now for 24 hours a day for 422 days (since the project started). I don't even realize it is running when I am doing anything on my systems. If I haven't convinced you to crunch flat-out 24/7, and if you are using the United Devices Agent (it is the one that has a window for monitoring the progress of the work unit you are running and has the United Devices logo in the lower right corner of the window), the team that supports the World Community Grid developed a means of throttling your cpu usage which is described here. If you are running the BOINC version of the software, I am not familiar enough with it, but just let us know here in the team thread. Other team members are familiar with that and will be able to help you. You also said you have a couple other systems you want to add to the grid. Are they interconnected in a lan now. If they already are, it should be quite easy. If not, let us know and several of us will be able to help you to choose the best solution. Keep your eye on the team thread. Our team captain, Dave Autumns, will post a welcome and tell you how to get bio information on the team website. Our graphics wizard, Graham, will post instructions for you to set up a nice signature for the forums when he wakes up to greet you. I am sure they will both be along sometime soon since they are both located in the UK and it is now almost 6 AM there. Again, welcome to the team. Lots of us have personal reasons for participating. I am a survivor of two cancers and right now am recovering from complications from a surgery I had early in December which was to determine if I had another cancer (lucky for me I did not, it is the surgery that is causing the problems I am now having). Your new team mate, |

![]() .................A BIG ”My Online Team” WELCOME.................![]() .......................to our newest team member! ......................![]() ................................... Mac386 ................................![]() ![]() Morning guys. Welcome to MOT Ron, and thanks for getting us back to an even number of members DB's advice is good mate. Like him, I run my PCs 24/7 without the need to throttle them back. As Dave mentioned, the agent software is designed to release resources on demand. You say you're not too hot with PCs yet, so it might be best if you give BOINC a wide birth until you know more. I've never used BOINC, and don't want to, but it seems it can be a bit iffy at times. The standard agent software is probably more stable for your needs right now. Good to have you aboard, and good luck with the crunching. |
