I live in the Research Triangle Park area of NC. I think WCG could get a big boost in membership in an area like this if the following tact were taken:
Offer the WCG as a research vehicle. Mandate that at least one run in 10 must be one of the two prime WCG projects. You may be able to define a minumum number of team members before non-WCG prime projects are accepted. That way, you could 'frontload' the special projects with WCG prime project CPU cycles. Note: it would be nice if we could specify percentages for multiple projects. |

There already is a pretty significant presence on the grid from RTP. Three teams with RTP in their name have 231 members. Another 118 members are on teams with the word "Carolina" in their name including one for NC State and another for East Carolina. Duke seems to be missing from the picture, though. As for competition, there is quite a bit of that already through the teams as you can see in the Teams forum. I will admit, only 349 members in an area like found around RTP seems pretty low. Not all members from the area show up only in those teams with RTP in the name. Some aren't affiliated with any teams and others (myself among these) are registered with teams that have nothing to do with the area. It sure would be nice to see the three schools jump on board like Kentucky Wildcats Folding Team! One member of that team appears to be in charge of the PC's at the school and has over 1600 registered devices (I am sure there are a lot of re-installs included in that figure) and he has produced enough results since he joined in July to be #1 in points, results returned and total run time! Previously that position was occupied by an IBM'er in Rochester who was in charge of some R&D lab. With the resources available to the project team being somewhat limited, it is probably incumbant upon those of us that are members to get the word out where we can. I know the project team does work to do some recruiting, but they are limited by their numbers and, I am sure, by their budget as to what they can do. Anyway, it is nice to hear from another neighbor here in the Triangle. Best regards, |

Lewis/Charles,
I sent a WCG blurb to the student body president in Chapel Hill (suggesting the competition). He forwarded it to someone else. I also sent a WCG blurb to an associate who is a network admin at the Duke Dept of Medicine. There are thousands of PCs in his network and we've discussed them as an underutilized research tool. Maybe you can approach the directors of the Infectious Disease departments/clinics at Duke and Chapel Hill medical centers. For that matter, why not approach the head of these healthcare and university organizations?!? |

Perhaps a good approach would be for them to become a partner. Check out the partner page: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewOurPartners.do There's at least one partner from your area... Coastal Federal Credit Union.
A good example of using underutilized PC in university labs may be found at the University of Kentucky. Here's their team page: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=QF9LM1W9P1 At first glance, you might say.... 19 members, ho-hum. But scroll down to "Team Member Details and Statistics" and click on the Member Name link. Then scroll down to and click on member UKSCS and you will see an astouding 1,641 devices. There's your lab PCs. This is something that every university could do. Perhaps your schools can do something similar. |
