confused BOINC Upload Failures

All day I've been getting:

World Community Grid|Started upload of eb198_20_1_0
World Community Grid|Started upload of eb054_15_6_0
World Community Grid|Error on file upload: [eb198_20_1_0] locked by file_upload_handler PID=2326
World Community Grid|Error on file upload: [eb054_15_6_0] locked by file_upload_handler PID=2545
World Community Grid|Temporarily failed upload of eb054_15_6_0: transient upload error
World Community Grid|Backing off 25 minutes and 34 seconds on upload of file eb054_15_6_0
World Community Grid|Temporarily failed upload of eb198_20_1_0: transient upload error
World Community Grid|Backing off 1 hours, 19 minutes, and 35 seconds on upload of file eb198_20_1_0

This just started today...
It usually fixes its self after a long time and sends the results, but it sure slows the process of uploading my results, it's using Rosetta 4.21. It's almost like Rosetta isn't ending correctly?

This does not explain your particular error message. Apparently this is something that the staff should look into. I will send them a note.

This message is an indication that there is an attempt by two or more File Upload Handlers that are trying to perform a file action on one file at the same time. Allowing two processes to change a file at the same time is, um, a no-no ...

This error usually happens when the first attempt to upload a file fails and the second or subsequent attempt is tried before the Data Server has released the "write lock" on the original upload attempt.

The "PID" is the Process Identification Number, or the number that identifies the process that is doing the work. This unique number allows the administrators to locate a process that is not performing correctly and to halt/kill it before starting another new process.

The file path that is listed is the actual filename and path on the Data Server, not the on the Participant's Computer.

Hmmm I see. According to that it's not my problem but it's on the server...oh and of this post time right here BOTH those files have yet to be uploaded

Re: BOINC Upload Failures

Hello Chase Wright,
I have sent a note, but I think that people are taking the weekend off to do some Christmas shopping. Since there is nothing that can be done from your end, why not ignore your computer for a while? Or, this sounds like a great time to try a new computer game, doesn't it?

Re: BOINC Upload Failures

Chase,

Your results appear to have been partially uploaded to the server.

The message "Error on file upload: [eb054_15_6_0] locked by file_upload_handler PID=2545" indictates that there was an attempt to upload that result while another upload was in progress.

I suspect that something happened to cause your upload to be interrupted in a very unusual way. The client would try to send the result again and you could get that error for a couple of minutes until the server clears itself. What I am not clear about is that once the upload mechanism resets itself (which could take 2-3 minutes). It should have allowed you to upload the file again and overwrite the partial file. I'm looking into that now. I have manually deleted your partial files - please let me know if once the backoff time expires if you are still unable to upload the files.

They have been uploaded, thank you for all your hard work :) let me know if there's anything I can do to help you figure out why this happened. I should tell you that I have had to send Windows Error Reports a few times on/about Rosetta, each time it asked me to send some registry information with it...(I'd say I've sent 3 in the past 3 weeks) haven't had one recently though that I know of.

Re: BOINC Upload Failures

Hi Kevin,

I am getting the same msg for one of the tasks that my pc has completed. During the upload, my broadband connection network disappeared temporarily and the upload was interrupted. I had to disconnect the internet connection then reconnect. It then tried to re-upload but enccountered the error.

The task id is X000005828083620509261144_0_0. It keeps retrying to upload but sets it to retry again. Is there anything I can do to rectify the problem.

Cheers, Tornjak

Re: BOINC Upload Failures

Hi Tornjak!
I see that you have restarted your network connection.
Have you also tried to restart Boinc itself and/or to reboot your system?

Cheers. Jean.
