I don't get it. Using UDmon I have downloaded 10 WU's to process on a standalone machine. I set the first WU running the other day, and hoped that when I got back to the office today that it would have finished them all, or nearly finished.
Instead I find that it finished the 1st WU, but then couldn't start the second because UD.exe was still running. I had assumed UDmon would have been able to close UD.exe when it finished each WU and then automatically re-start it. Surely this is why UDmon asks for the location of UD.exe when you first run it? So is there a setting that I'm missing, or is UDmon really unable to close and re-start UD.exe and re-start processing of the WU's automatically? If not, then this needs to be built into it. Thanks Ted |

It may be attempting to send/receive the same slot all of the time.
----------------------------------------First. Go to the cache tab. If the whole area is blank, you are only concentrating on one workunit. The "use cache" box should be checked to show all slots. Position the mouse in the large area containing the workunits. Right click on that and click on "run oldest WU". It should then cycle through the workunits one by one. As you get better watching UDMonitor, you can wait until the AutoDock green line in graph "C" recycles or the Rosetta task percentage jumps a tenth or more before switching slots manually. A shorthand method is to watch the UDMonitor flask icon. Switch only when blue. If it is red or yellow, wait. If you see any results, you can switch to them and "harvest" when you are connected. I have enough slots in each system to last 5-7 days.

This is strictly from my failing memory but isn't there a switch somewhere in UDMon that says something like, send results before switching slots? If I remember that switch correctly, if turned on, would only switch slots after:
----------------------------------------a) Completing the WU in the current slot b) Sending the results of that slot c) Fetching a new WU for that slot and then it would go find the slot with the oldest WU and repeat the process? If this is wrong (fairly likely), someone please correct it/me. |

There is, but I haven't used it. The whole point for me (on dialup) is to crunch several workunits in series and not to tie up the primary phone line by calling in after each one. I have found no automatic DISCONNECT, so the connection would remain active for a few hours. I usually only harvest workunits manually and disconnect manually once or twice per day to minimize phone downtime.
----------------------------------------If I see a workunit about to finish, I have been known to connect and turn off the cache. That workunit will then send/receive and start another one in that slot. I can then turn the cache back on and move on.

retsof. I was responding to the original post. Suggesting that if that switch was on, to turn it off so it would switch slots without having to upload & download. Anyway, there is a setting in XP dialup properties>options>Redialing options where you can set "Idle time before hanging up:". If you set this to a low figure, then it should drop the connection quickly (if I remember how that works... Luckily, I use dialup only as a last resort when I am on the road nowdays).

I use UDMon without any issues but I saw this problem when first getting used to it - sounds like you have a shortcut to UD.exe in the startup directory; this is incorrect. You need to make a shortcut to "udmon-wcg.bat" (you will find this in the WorldCommunityGrid directory, which is also where you should have extracted the UDMon files to) and put this shortcut in your startup directory - also you MUST delete the shortcut to UD.exe.
Unless you do this the UD agent starts itself and UDMon cannot shut it down to switch caches. UDMon will start and stop the agent as necessary. If you need any more help with this program ask away |

All I can do is wonder when I see a query about UD Mon. |

If used properly UDMon is an excellent piece of s/ware and means my machines never 'miss a beat' regardless of server/ net downtime

I've returned to this idea to see if anything has changed since the last time. I notice there's some beta releases, but no official new releases. So I am still struggling as I did before.
----------------------------------------I ran the application on an Internet connected PC, created a couple of slots, and clicked 'Send\Receive' and it downloaded one WU. Then I closed UD.exe and did Send\Receive again, and it downloaded another WU into the second slot. No problems there particularily (although the opening and closing of UD.exe is a faff meaning I can just tell the app to 'download X number of WU's' and leave it to it for 10 minutes. I then ran it on my non-Internet connected PC, enabled the cache, and told it to run the oldest WU as described above. Off it went starting with the oldest. I came in today, and sure enough, it stopped again because "UD is already running". So the other WU did not get processed at all. I've also entered the appropriate StartUp entry as specified above, although I expect this is only relevant after a reboot anyway? All I can do is wonder when I see a query about UD Mon . Well, I don't. While I'm sure it seems obvious to you seasoned crunchers, I find it's interface bizarre and difficult to grasp. It's great that it's been created, and for free, but it does need simplifying a bit. In summary, all I want to do is connect a drive to an Internet machine, download a stash of WU's, reconnect the drive to a standalone PC, run UDMon and leave it running for several days, come back and find all the WU's complete. I don't consider myself thick, but I just can't seem to work it out! [Edit 1 times, last edit by TedSmith28 at Oct 13, 2006 10:25:22 AM] |

Still got the unsupported UD Mon on my disk and fired it up and sure enough it gave that 'alreary running' message. What u need to do is for UD monitor to initiate the UD.exe start and ensure to Autostart folder or anything fires it up before. Below 2 screen print of the settings on my machine. Untick the last box in the second one, as that's for on-line.
