shock Uh oh... had to re-register a UD agent...

I had an agent paused message going for a while on one of my computers. Checked the forums and saw the post by upslinger regarding network problems. So I shut down UD and just now, I started it back up, and I had to re-register... I have not checked any of my other computers yet, but I hope that I will not have to do this for all my other computers. The straw that broke the camel's back at "the other place" was this constant re-registration thing, amongst a slew of other issues. I have had a great experience so far with WCG and I hope this is an isolated incident. Anybody else experiencing this?

Re: Uh oh... had to re-register a UD agent...

Hi Chowbow.

I'm one of the ones who returned to WCG during the Grid re-reg problems. My agents at home were backing off, but they reconnected without needing a re-reg here. Seems like an isolated incident so far.

Crunch on. smile

no re-registration here, sounds like a problem on your end.

Re: Uh oh... had to re-register a UD agent...

2 agents had to re-register so far. My rig at work, and my fastest cruncher at home. Other computers seem OK, although they have not returned units in 5+ hours. I would hate to go through this again, and I'll re-reg a couple times at the most, before I get sick of it. I have computers at far away locations and having to re-reg those would be a major pain...

Re: Uh oh... had to re-register a UD agent...

Chowbow:
While this problem may not be unique to you, let me assure you that this is not normal and does not happen to the vast majority of folks running either agent.

The next time you see an agent paused, you need to remember that it is generally paused by a failure to communicate with the servers. Usually this is a firewall issue or a network problem. Once in a great while there is a server problem....though these are rare.

This does not indicate that a re-registration is necessary, only that the communication has failed. Assuming that this is a UD agent installation on Windows, then you can force the agent to retry the communication by double clicking on the little icon in the system tray (lower right hand of the screen). The WCG window will come up with a box in front of it and you click OK to retry to communicate.

If you do nothing when this agent paused indicator is on, the agent will retry communicating periodically. Presumably, if the communications problem is temporary, it will fix itself. If you are on dial-up and the line is down, all you have to do is redial, connect and click as explained above. To find out if it is a communications line problem, just start a browser window and see if you can surf. If it is not a communications problem between you and the net, then it could be some other network connection problem and it should get corrected over time. That leaves the firewall issue...but then if you can get there sometimes with a firewall up, you should be able to get there anytime with a firewall up...that is unless certain traffic is restricted by time-of-day (which is done in some places -- it is also sometimes done in routers if you have those). Finally there are other problems that can cause pause but they do not generally come and go.

Sorry about the longwindedness (what a word). smile Does any of the above help confused

Re: Uh oh... had to re-register a UD agent...

Robert,

From what I have seen here, the re-registration is not typical. On my machine at home, I did not do anything since I was at work all day. It was crunching in the morning before I left, and when I returned home, the registration screen was up. I closed the window, restarted, and same thing... registration window is up. Checked existing member and put in my password and it was back to crunching. It is not a network problem on my end as all the other computers going through the same router and same cable connection sent and received WUs fine. Several other computers on other DSL / T1 connections connected fine as well. So not a problem with internet connection, and not a problem with agent paused. I realize there is not much downtime with WCG from my experience. And up until now, at most it was just the agent paused message. This is the first time I've had to re-register any of my clients (and it was only 2 computers), which is quite strange. I HAD to re-register, there was no other choice... no agent paused message this time. I've ran the UD client for a long time and know the ins and outs of it by now.

Nevertheless, hope it doesn't happen again. I hate editing devices in My Grid, brings back memories of the horrid problems at the "other place." I also like to use the stats to somewhat compare which computer is generally faster and how long each one has been crunching. With re-reg, things start from the beginning again, and like at the "other place," you may end up with 4000 devices even though you may only have 10 real machines. laughing

Edit: BTW, I checked the processor score page you had in your sig. I get a 291 on my Opty, which would be 2nd in your list. Do I win a cookie?!?! biggrin

Re: Uh oh... had to re-register a UD agent...

Hum…
Very odd. confused We do not know if it finished the unit it was working on or not and don’t know why it tried to reregister.

About the only scenario that I can think of is that it finished the unit, uploaded, downloaded and then could not determine your membership from where it gets that info…I think this is a file on your disk.

That being the case, it would be a disk error, a disk controller error or a memory error, with the disk error being the most likely. This leads me to think there may be a bad spot on the disk. Can you run/do you have the disk utilities that sometimes come with new disk drives to run non-destructive tests on disk drives?

Oh…on that cookie thing… The only ones I have are on my disk drives…the others don’t last long enough to cool down. biggrin
