Missing udagent.msi

Hi, I cannot run, uninstall, nor re-install the WCG agent.
Uninstalling and re-installing fails because of an error message: "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable (........) path to a folder containing installation package 'udagent.msi in the box below".
This happened after the TP's security was slightly messed up because of two Administrator's accounts, one of which was removed by the helpdesk. The removed account probably had originally installed the WCG Agent.
I think the Windows registry has some key values left, pointing to this missing file.
What can I do to re-install the WCG Agent ? thinking

applause Re: Missing udagent.msi

Ok navigate to control panel>double click add remove programs>scroll down to world community grid and click remove. once complete restart computer and reload software. You should get smile

If crying then you might consider the noughty way devilish that is delete the folder in c:\program files\worldcomm... it is not recommended to do it this way but if you cant uninstall it any other way this is the quickest but remember to restart you computer before reinstalling.

And that sould be that

Re: Missing udagent.msi

Hi NJEGBERS,

I have not seen the problem you are describing and was unable to find any posting in the forums relating to the problem. My guess is that this will probably require the expertise of the developers that built the instalation package. Could you send a Contact Uswith as much information as you can to the project office for assistance. Please be aware of the fact that tomorrow is a holiday in the US (Thanksgiving) and many people make a 4-day weekend of it, so a response may take a few days. I will let the project office know of your problem so that they are aware of it.

Best regards,

Hello NJEGBERS,
I do not know what is going wrong in your system, but I can reassure you about the registry. The UD Agent on Windows does not touch your registry. It installs an uninstall routine, a screensaver, a shortcut in a startup directory and the worldcommunitygrid directory. This sounds like a file-permissions problem to me.

I was able to help someone at Grid.org with a similar problem. Here is the solution:

You will need to have downloaded the installer to your PC.

1 Open WorldCommunityGridAgent.exe with WinRar
2 Extract the four files to a new folder
3 Right Click on the udagent.msi file and select Uninstall

You can follow the same procedure to re-install the agent. In step three, select Install

NB Although this would work for someone without a corrupted registry or insufficient admin rights (and I'm not sure why the permissions would 'corrupt'), this method may not work. If it doesn't work and just gives you the same kind of message, follow these steps.

1 Take the four files from the installer package you already extracted
2 Use your CD writing package and create a new ISO cd
3 drop the four files into the root of the new CD
4 burn the new CD
5 Insert the CD and go to the root
6 Right Click on the msi file and select Install / Uninstall as required

NB To save you 'wasting' a disc, you could do this instead....
(replace line 4 above with this instruction)
4 create an image of the new CD, i.e. ISO, IMG etc and mount the image when made to your favourite virtual CD package.

I would recommend something like VirtualDaemon for the mounting process.

I hope this helps... smile

Re: Missing udagent.msi

Thanx for all reaxions. I finally succeeded in installing the WCG Agent. biggrin
I have unpacked the installation program to folder C:\TEMP\WorldCommunityGridAgent, as suggested by Coolstream, and clicked the udagent.msi . This caused the same error message again.
I took a closer look at it, and saw that, though the text of the error message is "...or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'udagent.msi' in the box below.", the mentioned dropdown box "Use feature from" pointed to folder: C:\DOCUME~1\EGBERS~1.IBM\LOCALS~1\Temp\WZSE0.TMP\WCG Agent DISK 1 .
I have replaced this value by the newly created C:\TEMP\WorldCommunityGridAgent, and then the installation proceeded fluently.
So unpacking WorldCommunityGridAgent.exe to a folder really did the trick.
Now I am back unfolding proteins again.
Thanx again, and greetings from:
Nico Egbers, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Re: Missing udagent.msi

Hi Nico,

Thanks for adding the error message you obtained and the ammendment which provided the solution.

The last user that had the same problem got having to insert the location of the files by using the 'CD' method I talked about. It's strange that the installer doesn't automatically detect the location of the new files.

I am glad that you are crunching again though biggrin

>>Admins. Feel free to use my post with Nico's ammended info to create a tip for fellow users. Since this is now the second instance I have encountered, I am sure that at some time others will have the same or similar problem and a 'sticky' might just get them back up and crunching without having to wait for this info to be repeated.

Re: Missing udagent.msi

For future reference, another way to uninstall the agent when the usual methods don't work. That is to delete the install directory (usually "C;\Program Files\WorldCommunityGrid" and also remove the UD.SCR program from the Windows directory. If you cannot delete the directory, it may be because the agent is still running. Use the Task Manager to End the UD.exe process first and then delete the directory. You will need Administrator rights if there are further permissions problems. Remove any instances of World Community Grid in Start -> Programs -> Startup and Start -> Programs -> WorldCommunityGrid for all users. After a reboot, you should be set to install anew. If someone has set up a custom installation to run the agent as a service, scheduled task, or pre-logon screen saver, they will have to undo those settings as well.
