Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

Status and start dates or even restart dates are very fluid. I think they had a nice plan laid out to progress on MAM and even restarting old ARP WUs,

I personally discourage WCG from putting out dates, as they are changing hardware as well as the software of the system. I think it is better to just give us the plan without dates and update us (monthly?) on where they are in the plan, their successes, the changes, and the new problems to solve. Putting dates on things just leads to disappointment and angry users.

I'll update the first post with links to posts with news or put the news itself in the first post. We just haven't had any news in a while, and I'm not sure how valid old news/plans are.

I check the WCG link and the hardware link daily, and I still think someone else will helpfully post a link or alert to new info before I will. We have a great community here.

If there is a particular tidbit of news you think I should include for the projects, let me know. I don't think date of last returned result is that interesting, as it tells me nothing about when it may restart.

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

Problems again. Extremely hard to get any work, and the website and forum is very slow.

Often replies with:

503 Service Unavailable
No server is available to handle this request.

Or even replies with the dreaded "Log in" popup.

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

Thanks for the post Grumpy. I couldn't get in to post during that up and down mess. While the website was up and down, I was still sending and receiving WUs.
The website now seems stable.

MCM and ARP WUs are flowing at the moment.

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

I find that I can see that ARP is flowing, but not get any. I often check Adri's site and the WU prop site, so I can see they are flowing, but I won't get any until a while later. I'm guessing when other people have their caches full, and then I'll get the "spillover".

I've been dry for a while, but now I'm getting a trickle of ARP WUs now. It is hard when I have empty slots just waiting for ARPs (I reserve 2 slots just for ARP). I run MCM in other slots, but if I don't have any ARP I keep those slots empty so any I get can start right away.

I was running a "app_config.xml" file to keep some slots open for ARP (I'm no longer using the "app_config.xml" file) this is on a 16 thread machine, but I found that if I set the Workunit Cache Settings in the WCG profile that machine is using to the settings below and limit the number of WUs to 64 MCM (this machine will download up to 600 MCM WUs if set to Unlimited) all slots will run MCM if no ARP WUs are available and when ARP WUs become available BOINC bumps the MCM WUs to "waiting to run" in order to run the ARP WUs that are available.

Workunit Cache Settings
Connect to network about every 0.5 days
Cache 1.5 extra days of work

Africa Rainfall Project 8
Mapping Cancer Markers 64
OpenPandemics - COVID-19 Unlimited

I don't know why this is working like this, I would think they would just run in order as downloaded but nothing is running at "high priority" and all the WUs finish well before the deadline and it beats having unused slots.

I noticed this behavior after the last couple of times I ran out of WCG WUs.

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

Well, we had a bit of "503 Service Unavailable" today too, and an extremely slow website. It seems to be alright now though. I'm crunching so little now, so I really can't judge whether or not tasks are flowing or not. My need for tasks, are just a couple of MCM tasks/day.

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

For the past couple of weeks the website has had problems. It is fine now, so I can post, but it has been laggy and unavailable at times. It is up and down. It doesn't seem to bother the downloading and uploading of WUs.

My wild guess with absolutely no proof. WCG has had hardware problems. I think they have few working machines and they alternate between generating fresh ARP WUs, and generating fresh MCM WUs (not sending and receiving which I think is on another system). I think the hardware is limited and when they do one thing that there might be issues with the others. To say it another way, they have a small cluster of machines that needs to do 3 things and it isn't sufficient to do all 3 at once. I'm hopeful that the coming machine upgrades will help, but we have no info exactly when that is happening.

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

Most of the day today, I have been getting the 503 error - no server is available for your request type message. Right now the system seems to be working which is why I was able to login and am able to post. I have been receiving a full complement of MCM and a partial complement of ARP.

Cheers
