Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

I second what Grumpy Swede said... all the png files downloading again and getting transient errors.

edit: I manually retried to get all the png files to download, so I could get a WU.

edit: Thank you to all who post such detailed info on the issues so TigerLily can pass a detailed message to the techs.

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

Thanks TigerLily,

Same here Unixchick.
But I expect the downloading of the definition files is what is "fixing" the problem. And this download will occur once when each system polls WCG for an update.

Remember, it appears that virtually EVERYONE is updating these files at the same time - hence the transient errors.

Yes, it's annoying to have those transient errors back. But the problem that previously existed has now vanished once that download has completed.

... Now, back to our regularly scheduled crunching

Hi Grumpy Swede and Unixchick,

I passed these additional concerns on to the tech team and they said that the transient HTTP errors are likely because the brief feeder downtime built up some demand. The issue with PNGs re-downloading should pass shortly and the team is looking into why this occurred to try and prevent this from happening in the future.

Well, maybe someone needs to monitor the WCG FB group a bit more closely, as I was posting there about the frequent intermittant 503 and Ssystem errors, as it was impossible to post on the forum.

Those errors have for at least the last year always been the indicator/early warning that something is about to go south again... sad

The larger set of WUs to report on my programming laptop has cleared out, and a handful of new WUs seemed to have been send so far, let's hope this all settles down again before everyone heads into the weekend...

For information:

As Grumpy Swede observed, we've seen this happen before -- 2023-12-02...

If anyone is interested in what causes that message, I posted about it in an earlier version of this thread, including a [partial] explanation (though the cause was never confirmed...)

Cheers - Al.

Well, that what happened back in December was pretty much in the middle of the months long unmitigated issue of validated WUs not being properly being purged, so (without ever getting any real info about what happened) that could have been related to that issue.
While I had posted recently that I started to see an uptick in WUs waiting to be purged longer than "usual" (and not talking about the "new normal"), it seems that it is now caused by a lot of waiting for resends, as a lot of WUs I had already returned, a lot of WUs from the hoarders had not, thus timed out, a new one send and either timed out as well or returned in error.

But I still wondering why after almost two years now, there doesn't seem to be any effort being made to look a bit more proactive into unusual things being reported instead of waiting until things come to a head and everybody is reporting issues...

Probably all the usual suspects: lack of personnel, lack of resources, lack of money, inadequate hosting facility, lack of redundancy, lack of failover systems, etc. Nothing that an infusion of money would not cure.
All that being said, I am not complaining because it is their system, which I am glad to use when it is available, but there never has been a guarantee of unlimited work units. Would I like to see more reliability in their systems ? Absolutely. Would I like to see more communication ? Absolutely. If I don't like the way they run their system I can always just leave. However, I think the work has merit (at least I hope so), therefore I choose to stay and crunch what is available when it is available.
I am always hoping for better, but take what I can get.

Cheers

We need to give the techs the time to find the balance between MCM and ARP the system can handle, and not whine too much about crashes and slowdowns as they work out the sweet spot.

I agree with these two comments. I would also add that I have several projects setup on BOINC and during a recent weekend WCG was the only project providing work units. Many projects have an intermittent supply.

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

We are getting a decent flow of MCM right now. Probably not as much as everyone needs, but still some for everyone.

I agree Unixchick. I'm getting all the MCM tasks I'm asking for. I'm not running my OPNG cruncher at the moment, so I can't say if they are flowing OK though.
