2023-12-11 Update (Device profile issue)

Several users have reported that they are unable to update their preferences within their Device Profile. Thank you to all the users who have brought this issue to our attention. This issue was passed on to the tech team, who have been working to investigate this issue and find a fix. Messages are not being delivered between the webserver and BOINC database, which is how we capture and synchronize changes from the BOINC manager to the device profile, or from the website to the BOINC database server to update the device profile that BOINC has. The tech team is currently working on a fix for this issue, and we will continue to provide updates as they work to resolve it.

Update: Our tech team has made an attempt to resolve this issue. As of 3:00 PM EST, it appears that Device Profile settings can be updated and saved. However, please let us know if you suspect that web preferences are not being respected by the BOINC client in a reasonable amount of time (or at all) when you select "use web prefs" in the BOINC manager.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Re: 2023-12-11 Update (Device profile issue)

Well, the problem isn't totally fixed yet. Yes, it's possible now to update the device profiles, but the changes are not carriied over to BOINC. So, the old settings are still in effect, even though the new settings are registered in the Device Profile you change.

I updated one of my profiles a couple of hours ago, but BOINC still thinks that my last update was Nov 30, as can be seen here:

11/12/2023 23:08:36 | World Community Grid | General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 30-Nov-2023 21:06:27)

So, almost fixed I'd say, but in the end the changes in the settings are not carried over to BOINC.

Re: 2023-12-11 Update (Device profile issue)

Is there a time delay between when the changes are made on the web site and when the message being passed to BOINC? I set up a "non-General prefs" test (increasing a task limit but making no other change) but it appears not to have been actioned within half an hour because the system affected by that change returned a task then and only one new task was delivered in response (so some work is available)... If there isn't a time delay in message transfer, I have to agree with Grumpy Swede!

I set up the above-mentioned test in support of the points mentioned below (which constituted the original version of this post...)

There are different sorts of device profile change:

  • If a user changes any of the parameters that relate to things that would be found under Computing Preferences on other BOINC sites (possibly by switching to a different profile), that should be seen as a General prefs change.
  • If all the user changes are things that would be found under Project Preferences on other BOINC sites (e.g. which applications to run, or maximum tasks allowed on client per project) without switching profiles that isn't a General Preferences modification and probably shouldn't result in a General prefs change notification.
I wonder if some of the reports of the client not seeing changes are in fact examples of case 2 above, and the technicians might end up looking for a problem that isn't actually there! (Stating the nature of the problem - e.g. "doubled my MCM1 limit but not getting extra work" -- would clarify that...)

Perhaps some further information is needed regarding the above?

Cheers - Al

Re: 2023-12-11 Update (Device profile issue)

Well, no matter of whether changes in Device Profile settings according to point 1 or point 2 should result in a new message in BOINC, it is at least a confirmation that the changes have been registered, and likely acted on. So, I like that message in both cases.

In my case, I changed one profile to NOT ask for GPU tasks, just after I had discovered that it was working again, and posted here about it [Dec 11, 2023 8:23:29 PM UTC+1], and it was registered and can be seen on the Device Profile page. However it was not acted on by BOINC, and still isn't. The computer in question on that profile, is still asking for both GPU and CPU tasks, many hours later.

So, it's 100% clear, that the changes does not carry over to BOINC now. And when it comes to time delay, it has never been any time delay to speak of before. After changing something on the Device Profile, one could just head over to BOINC and make an "update", and the message about the latest change date/time, will appear.

Edit: I only run one project (WCG), and I never change any General Prefs on the Device profiles page. I use local prefs in BOINC for all those settings.

Grumpy Swede,

Thanks for the clarification, which came in as I edited my original post to reflect that I had managed to demonstrate the same issue (and agreed with you!). Your response is exactly the sort of detail I would hope for and had asked for in the edit, which you would not have seen :-(

I could wish some other users would provide enough information :-)

Cheers - Al.

P.S. I am not going to go back and reverse my edits on that post :-)

@alanb1951

The same issue happened in September, as well as right after WCG came back from the migration.

See my September post: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg...ad,45745_offset,20#689875

Re: 2023-12-11 Update (Device profile issue)

Hi Grumpy Swede,

Thank you for alerting us to this issue. We were able to reproduce this issue on our end. Saving changes under Device Management to the different profiles succeeds and this change is reflected in the website database, however these updated preferences are not being forwarded to clients on contact with the scheduler when selecting "use web prefs." A member of the tech team is currently working on finding a fix.

Hi,

I can confirm the issue on the webpage has been solved but the changes are not respected by the BOINC client.
