One of my machines is an I7-3770. It completes most of the MCM in 2-3 hours. Runs Win 7. It is the main machine my wife uses. Even running all 8 threads she never says anything about lag. It stays pretty responsive.

Interesting for the 2 hrs. Most of the MCM on that i7-3770 are in the 5 hr range as per my stats on WCG for the last 2 days. The CPU/ELAPSED times are all within 1-2 minutes. A sprinkle of 2hr and 3hr. In the queue right now they are all 4:2 hrs. I'm assuming there are MCM of different time lengths.

Just getting started with WCG as a way to repurpose a very old system, so this is the least computing power on this thread by far -- I have a single Dell Dimension 4600 (i686) with one Pentium 4 at 2.60 GHz and 1 gig of RAM. WCG is unique so far among BOINC projects that interest me since it usually has work available for a 32 bit architecture! My system is running Debian 11 w/ LXDE. I usually have it on 24/7. Have had it up for a couple months and have worked on OPN, MCM, and SCC.
Might add another old computer as well that's too slow to repurpose as a workstation but still has most of its components in good order. Seems better to have these older systems working on useful projects rather than recycling them? Anyway, I'm also in Minnesota so have added my slow trickle of completed work units to Minnesota Crunchers -- hi Sgt. Joe! |

@BobbyB
----------------------------------------Thanks for the feedback. I agree I use my machine more than just crunching. Am pleased your machine is what you wanted to do. When work is available are you able to process work on your graphics card? In regards to Rosetta I agree with you I prefer the old work too. Currently it is very few and far between ![]() |

When work is available are you able to process work on your graphics card? It's actually an old ATI Radeon X600 dated 2004. I've turned off that option and doubt it could do anything. |

----------------------------------------Seems better to have these older systems working on useful projects rather than recycling them? I am no longer convinced of that anymore. I compare that to using an old 1970's gas guzzler to do Uber or deliver eats.Like you, I started the same way with an old Duo CPU P8400 laptop then an i3 540z and a Phenom II X4 955 until they started acting up. Now look at what I am running. I looked into Raspberry Pi because of low power usage. The thread is in this Hardware Chat Room somewhere. I retired that P8400 just from what I learnt in that thread which was that the laptop did no more work than the Pi but took about 4x the power. If they start acting up, don't pour money into them. Also don't take them just down because I wrote this. It's only an opinion. On the bright side, you may actually get addicted to this and go the same route I took I'm sure most here did not start with what they now run.[Edit 1 times, last edit by BobbyB at May 29, 2023 3:21:35 PM] |

Andy P:
----------------------------------------Bobby B does have a point. Those older systems, while they do work, they are terribly inefficient on a watts per work unit done. I applaud your effort in this regard and as long as you are willing to pay for the electricity, more power to you. I started years ago with a couple of PII's and a Pentium I. The Pentium I still works and I fire it up about once a year just run some old DOS stuff on it for fun I also still have a 386, but I would not even attempt to put BOINC on that, but sometime I might try it just to see if it is possible. It has been stated before that Linux is much more efficient with SCC than Windows so you should get some benefit from that. I appreciate your input. Cheers
