Re: SCC Project starts a new phase in their quest for curing childhood cancers

PS -- If you are doing GPU processing on Windows, and it's AMD, I'd challenge you to think long & hard before leaping.

I've got (3) different older systems with AMD GPU's which I've fought with on Debian. I haven't tried any other Distros, but have decided to go with NVidia at some point if I keep them around.

Re: SCC Project starts a new phase in their quest for curing childhood cancers

Notice I get two processes here for every one I get only one with top.
But for the cc1_vina_7.18_x86_64-pc process I get three. This may well have something to do with the problem.

Re: SCC Project starts a new phase in their quest for curing childhood cancers

Can someone recommend a Linux distro?: I want to see whether my Win 11 output could be improved upon. Thanks

I like Linux Mint because this distribution is very reliable and aligned with the current Ubuntu LTS without the disadvantages of some Ubuntu choices.
For headless systems, I use the current LTS version of Ubuntu Server.
For Raspberry Pi, I use the current Raspberry Pi OS version.

Cheers,
Yves

Re: SCC Project starts a new phase in their quest for curing childhood cancers

I also like Linux Mint.(Mate) It is easy to install, runs off of a flash drive and is stable. It runs for months with no problems. I also have one installation of Debian, not quite as user friendly as Mint but also ultra stable.
Granted I don't do much with Linux other than run WCG, but have dabbled with some spreadsheet and database applications. The bonus at this time is SCC runs VINA which is much more efficient on Linux then Windows.
Cheers

Re: SCC Project starts a new phase in their quest for curing childhood cancers

I am in joining running this project, under statistics it says the project is "Intermittent". Hopefully this will be able to be changed to "active"
I wish Linux was as easy to use as windows and would allow you to run all of the applications that run on Windows. I guess the advantage of running SCC on Windows is you get more run time for badges. I am not wanting to start a discussion on Linux in this thread. I am just commenting from my perspective

You don't get more runtime. You get (a lot) more tasks done. IIRC the VINA sciences run 50-60% faster on Linux than on Windows.
