Does anybody else find it painful that one of the best and most reliable projects for boinc is taking so long to get back on its feet? Yes i know upgrade and rebuild blah blah blah but seriously this mess is now making governments look competent

It is painful in the sense that we all want to be back doing the projects we love. I can see the step by step progress that is being made, so I'm looking forward to the next hurdle, hoping we are nearing the finish line of the testing phase.

boincstats has showing test WU results, yet the WCG/s own 'Overview' for 'My contribution' has shown NO test WUs to date!
----------------------------------------WCG.sig similarly does NOT show any WU activity... Will end to end internal and external results be consistently reported and catch up with test results?? |

I suspect that test WUs won't "count" when all is said and done.

I suspect that test WUs won't "count" when all is said and done. I would not put any bets on the fact that they could in fact count. I don't think there really has an official word about it yet.For me, this would be only a small drop in the huge bit bucket, but I guess it could be serious enough for a lot of newbie crunchers to have them even leave the project... Ralf,
I suspect that test WUs won't "count" when all is said and done. I would not put any bets on the fact that they could in fact count. I don't think there really has an official word about it yet.Once again, this is part of the testing phase and should not be viewed as a formal restart (although the work computed is real and helps the projects). which I read as "this is production work"...The core BOINC server functionality accumulates credit per device per project as a standard behaviour -- it just doesn't provide any user-facing reporting tools on it by default! -- WCG must have had that enabled to provide user statistics in the past, and I doubt they've changed that part of the core configuration (having no reason to do so!) so the totals should be accumulating. So as long as there isn't some strange time limit built into the existing WCG user statistics process that makes the "My Contribution" statistics, there's no real reason that work done during this test period won't eventually get counted as the information should be there to add. That said, I hope it's the case that they just haven't been running [all] the statistics scripts, rather than there is some blockage somewhere :-) For me, this would be only a small drop in the huge bit bucket, but I guess it could be serious enough for a lot of newbie crunchers to have them even leave the project... I think more folks are likely to be driven away by some of the more pessimistic speculations I've seen in various threads -- that said, if the WCG team have some inkling as to whether all test period credit will be accrued eventually it would shut down some of the credit speculation at once -- they wouldn't even need to put an expected time on it :-)Ralf We can dream... Cheers - Al. |

Well, looking at BoincStats, WCG actually LOST 62,514,023 points yesterday. WCG stats went from 439,363,907,475 Total credit on July 27, to 439,301,393,452 Total credit, on July 28. Taking WCG back to even before the migration started. Could be just something that went wrong with the export/import of the stats from WCG, but could also mean something else. We'll probably see in the coming days, if it is corrected or not.

Well, looking at BoincStats, WCG actually LOST 62,514,023 points yesterday. OUCH! Those statistics are taken from an XML file at a known location on the server, and that file is generated by the only user stats program BOINC provides as standard (db_dump), which does nohing but write that file... (I presume IBM/WCC had left that alone and written separate stuff for the much more detailed stats one could get at WCG) As evidenced by that stats site link, it seems to have been running regularly (and probably more or less correctly) until now; interestingly, the Overview page current today says the last update to the user and team XML was on the 25th (but that might not mean what I think it ought to!) As you said, time will tell, so let's hope it's a file issue rather than a data loss. Cheers - Al. Next update on BoincStats for July 29, and the 62,514,023 that WCG lost on July 28, is still missing.
----------------------------------------https://www.boincstats.com/stats/15/project/detail/lastDays Edit: Looking at this BoincStats page, and the chart that says "Total Credit (Recent Months)", which actually covers credit data alla the way back to November 2005, one can actually see that WCG lost credit under several months from August 2019 to January 2020. I wonder if this maybe is because of some GDPR issue? [Edit 5 times, last edit by Grumpy Swede at Jul 30, 2022 10:48:49 AM] |
