July 21, 2022 Update/FAQ

Hi everyone,

The original testing phase has been very insightful and has helped us iron out the kinks in the system. It was a successful test - thank you for your participation and help. We are sending out even more workunits for users to crunch on. Once again, this is part of the testing phase and should not be viewed as a formal restart (although the work computed is real and helps the projects).

While we appreciate the enthusiasm of the community, we recommend new users or users with specific questions to read the announcements and sticky posts before making their own threads. Common questions have been addressed in an existing FAQ, have been explained in an announcement post or answered by forum members.

Here are some new issues that do not appear in the last FAQ:

  • We are aware of the issue whereby user progress as shown in the BOINC Manager is not reflected in your "My Contribution" page. We’re investigating the cause of this inconsistency and will address it in a future FAQ.
  • If you receive an error instructing you to “remove the project, then add http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/”, your ability to remove the project may be compromised by the use of an account manager. The project must be attached to BOINC and not an external account manager such as Science United.
  • Any WUs that were stalled during download were due a large backlog of download jobs on our scheduler that would hang and remain scheduled until a timeout was reached due to host keys that had changed. We will continue to monitor the upload servers but this issue should be both transient and resolved.
  • We are working to apply project preferences to the test batches.

To report new issues or errors, we encourage you to post them in the existing sticky/announcement threads, to keep the discussion organized. Thank you for understanding.

So far, so good...

I would highly suggest you modify the WCG home page to remove/update the last news item shown (a month ago, on 6/21), which in bight oranget color shows "[Let's get started!] ". Too many people just don't seem to read the actual article nor understand what "Web site and forum now online" means, assume that EVERYTHING is now operational and then mopper in the forum without checking already existing posts... sad

Why don't you update the FAQ to prominently contain those issues? Well, on the odd chance that someone actually reads the FAQ before posting the 23,765th message that they do not get any WUs....

Oh, this youthful enthusiasm biggrin ...

Re: July 21, 2022 Update/FAQ

1. I'd like to see WCG update the official BOINC Project URL to https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org instead of using http. Now's a great time to make this change before a full go live and restart.

2. Any references to IBM should be removed. There's still some stragglers, apparently.
----------------------------------------
  • i3-8100 (Coffee Lake, 4C/4T) @ 3.6 GHz
  • i5-4590 (Haswell, 4C/4T) @ 3.3 GHz
  • E5800 (Wolfdale, 2C/2T) @ 3.2 GHz

Well, before they deal with any of this, they first should make it work!

Re: July 21, 2022 Update/FAQ

When a new batch of ARP1-tasks is dropped into the crowds I'm seeing a reasonable download speed at first, soon (within a minute) followed by a huge drop to 20 to 30 KBps (according to BOINC Manager). Many devices at once are trying to pry some bytes from the servers, no doubt. Half an hour later most devices have downloaded their bits and the download speed can go up to more than 15,000 KBps.

Per ARP1-task there are 11 files that have to be downloaded from the server:
  • one ".input" file of 1785 bytes;
  • three files that have their name end in "." of 659,852 bytes each;
  • three files that have their name end in "_d01", "_d02" and "_d03" respectively of 12,485,444 bytes each;
  • three files that have their name end in ".7z" of about 12 to 20 MB each;
  • one file that has its name end in "." as well, this time with a size of 49,385,088 bytes.

    Of course, that last file takes the longest time to download and therefore it's keeping the server busy for the longest time. When a flood of download requests invades the network of the server, it tries to serve all requests at once, causing a slower download speed for each individual connection. The sooner a download completes, the sooner a connection can be freed up. The longer it takes to complete a download request, the longer it takes to free up that connection for the next download request.
    If all to be downloaded files belonging to one ARP1-task would be packed into one huge file, theoretically only one network connection would be needed for each ARP1-task.

    The more download capacity, the more network connections can be handled, the better each download request can be served, the less "transient HTTP error" messages we will see.

    Re: July 21, 2022 Update/FAQ

    ARP1 is the most intense download and upload of the current projects and everyone suddenly pounces as soon as any units are released. With a steady flow, downloads will be spread out so the current capacity might be sufficient.

    Having excess capacity costs more money. The question is how much capacity will they need in production? Probably IBM told them that.

    We are starting to visit those people now:

    On a good day, we just confiscate their keyboard. We probably won't actually ever give it back...but we might consider it for a sufficient incentive (fresh pies for a year for instance).

    On a bad day, we take a hammer to it, jump up and down on it, and then hand it (what's left of it) back to them.
