@Kevin: I've just checked whether the issue persists with macOS 12.1 and MCM 7.61, which it unfortunately does.
So, still no MCM tasks for me… :( |

Good news! After updating to macOS 12.2, my computer finished one task at low CPU settings. I'm going to verify that with a second task.

False Alarm.
The task ended, but look at the Output: <core_client_version>7.16.19</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <stderr_txt> Commandline = wcgrid_mcm1_map_7.61_x86_64-apple-darwin -SettingsFile MCM1_0189311_8531.txt -DatabaseFile dataset-sarc1.txt Settings File DateOfDesign = 20200218 Designer = Krembil/cubes WorkOrderID = 0189311_8531 DatasetID = sarc1 RSeed = 289838532 StartingGeneSignatureAlgorithm = randomFixedLengthSearch RunPermutationAlgorithm = 0 FitnessFn = 0 NumberOfGenesInStartingSignature = 20 NumberOfGenesInSignatureMin = 20 NumberOfGenesInSignatureMax = 20 SearchAlgorithmNumberToCreate = 34506 PositiveClasses = 5 6 MinFitness = 0.785 VMethod = LOO SvmArgs = "-v 0 -t 0 -c 1" SvmLearnLimit = 250000 [09:03:34] Initializing [09:03:43] Running [09:03:43] EvaluateFitnessOfStartingGeneSignatures 34506 [14:18:03] Writing final output [14:18:03] Closing Output Stream [14:18:03] Cleaning up Result.out = 25895.000000 Run complete, CPU time: 5972.138395 14:18:03 (71282): called boinc_finish(0) </stderr_txt> ]]> It was validated so I didn't look into the details. Maybe, someone should manually set that task to invalid: MCM1_0189311_8531_0 The same applies to my wingman's task, I think. The currently running MCM task behaves as expected. Progress is only observed when CPU time is set to 100 %. |

False Alarm. The task ended, but look at the Output: It sounds as if you have detected a problem in the output, Felix. I have compared your output with one of my (Valid) MCM tasks and would conclude that yours is in order. Here's mine, for the sake of completeness, on an Intel CPU: <core_client_version>7.16.11</core_client_version> <stderr_txt> Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcgrid_mcm1_map_7.61_i686-pc-linux-gnu -SettingsFile MCM1_0188518_9185.txt -DatabaseFile dataset-sarc1.txt Settings File DateOfDesign = 20200218 Designer = Krembil/cubes WorkOrderID = 0188518_9185 DatasetID = sarc1 RSeed = 281909186 StartingGeneSignatureAlgorithm = randomFixedLengthSearch RunPermutationAlgorithm = 0 FitnessFn = 0 NumberOfGenesInStartingSignature = 20 NumberOfGenesInSignatureMin = 20 NumberOfGenesInSignatureMax = 20 SearchAlgorithmNumberToCreate = 34506 PositiveClasses = 5 6 MinFitness = 0.785 VMethod = LOO SvmArgs = "-v 0 -t 0 -c 1" SvmLearnLimit = 250000 [15:22:21] Initializing [15:22:32] Running [15:22:33] EvaluateFitnessOfStartingGeneSignatures 34506 [19:32:40] Writing final output [19:32:40] Closing Output Stream [19:32:40] Cleaning up Result.out = 25625.000000 Run complete, CPU time: 8783.954628 19:32:40 (934734): called boinc_finish(0) </stderr_txt> [Edit 1 times, last edit by adriverhoef at Jan 31, 2022 6:22:19 PM] |

Thanks. I was expecting more output. Sorry about that.
The second task has now finished. It wouldn't go past the initialization without setting the CPU time to 100 percent. I'll test with a third task, if the issue of neverending tasks I was and am experiencing is just during the starting phase and post the results. |

I have an Intel iMacPro and a new M1 MacBook Pro- both on macOS 12.2. Both machines still can't complete MCM tasks (running BOINC v 7.16.19). Frustrated that this issue has stopped me from running MCM work units

Hello Nick,
A month ago I totally migrated from Windows to Mac and I also have this problem. Before I was able to run MCM for many years on Win 7, Windows 8.1 or Linux without any issues. Do you know is the problem we're facing now, platform specific or the problem is related with MCM algorithms and has just been uncovered by running on Mac machines? |

Hi Marcin,
It started with the update to macOS 12 (Monterey). Before, the MCM tasks ran perfectly fine for years. The tasks will finish if you increase the CPU time to a fairly high percentage, close to 100 %. I've recently had a few tasks I could get to run at low percentages after having them run at 100 % CPU time for one or two minutes. But, after this little success there was another task where I had to set the CPU time for the entire time. So, the issue is still around. I'll check every now and then if the current macOS update solves this issue. |
