Thanks for letting us stress out the machines and not only contribute to the science of the covid, but also a test of the system. I will stop using my GPU as there are much faster GPUs in this group than mine, and plenty of available GPUs to do the work.
I'm thinking I should put my CPUs to the task with the largest backlog of WUs, eventually, but I'll stick with Open Pandemics a bit longer. |

I advocated previously for switching all the CPU WU's for OPN into GPU units. Since most members are crunching multiple projects this would free up more processing power for those other projects without hindering the Open Pandemics research at all.
I am aware that the GPU still requires some CPU power to be allocated, but you get far more work done per CPU thread when the bulk is done on the GPU. Almost everyone would win from this scenario, the only ones who would lose out would be those hunting badges, but that could be gotten round by allocating notional time credits to GPU units that are equivalent to time to process as CPU only, in the same way that points credits has already been done. |

Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!
----------------------------------------MeowLOL. EDIT....I forget that many crunchers are far younger than myself, and may not get the humor in that old punch line. For those who don't understand... "Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!" is a widely quoted paraphrase of a line of dialogue from the 1948 film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. That line was in turn derived from dialogue in the 1927 novel The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,... Wikipedia The movie scene.... That scene, in turn, was parodied by Mel Brooks in his movie 'Blazing Saddles'. Meow ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by kittyman at May 5, 2021 12:11:48 AM] |

I never got around to bumping up my queue lengths, so I'm crunching my last few units as I write this. It was great while it lasted! We got to stress-test the infrastructure, participants' machines, and the participants themselves.
![]() If I get to a point where I can stop BOINC without losing too much ARP work, I'll go back to 15 CPU/1 GPU for tasks. |

What is the next phase after this stress test? Are we going to get regular WU's for GPU in the future? Just curious.

Yes, GPU work is being issued right now. But at a much lower rate than it was during the stress test. So it may be hard to get GPU work at times.

Just turned in the last of my stress-test units. Back to reality...

A little historical perspective.
----------------------------------------When I joined in 2004, I submitted 8 work units in the first 7 days. That got me ranked #383 of the 20,001 users. Over the last 7 days I submitted 3619 work units. 35.4% of all the points I have earned over the last 16+ years have been earned in the last week. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by pwhidden at May 5, 2021 1:10:50 AM] |

I advocated previously for switching all the CPU WU's for OPN into GPU units. Since most members are crunching multiple projects this would free up more processing power for those other projects without hindering the Open Pandemics research at all. I agree with this completely. It allows OPN to be completed as fast as they want it to while freeing CPU processing power to go towards projects that do not have the option to be on GPU. Almost everyone would win from this scenario, the only ones who would lose out would be those hunting badges, but that could be gotten round by allocating notional time credits to GPU units that are equivalent to time to process as CPU only, in the same way that points credits has already been done. Yes. Really, I think this should be done because currently GPUs can contribute more, but CPUs are unfairly treated preferentially for time credit since WCG pretends that GPUs only have 1 core. Using even an intel GPU as an example: i7 (4core / 8 thread): 1 hour x 8 = 8 hours time credit UHD 620(24 core): 1 hour x 24 = 1 hour time credit. The UHD 620 in this example gets 1/8th the time credit, but in that hour does roughly 9x the work. Even if you change it to per core it does 3x the work per core/hr. I will keep contributing regardless, but I do think that GPUs should be treated more fairly. ![]() |

My GPU crunched the last WU of the stress test.
It seems that vaccines are too slow to hold off fast mutating Corona viruses. Drugs are more suitable. Drug designs can be accelerated by GPU power. |
