Re: GPU Work Units - Post Your Tech Support Questions Here

I think that they are just in very short supply. I've had only four in the last couple of months.

Supply of OPNG is not super but they are distributed. I currently have 135 WUs on my systems.
But if you get a "No usable GPUs found" in your logs I would say it doesn't matter.
There must be a driver issue on your rig as Boinc doesn't detect any OpenCL.
I would look deeper into if OpenCL is correctly installed on your system.

Re: GPU Work Units - Post Your Tech Support Questions Here

Guidance please.

The PC I use to run WCG has a i5-6400 (Skylake) CPU and I’ve recently added an AMD Radeon R5 340X in order to keep crunching OpenPandemics. With the recent release of OPNG work units, I’m seeing completed WUs and substantial (for me) points earned, but very minimal increase in Run Time (the basis for earning Badges!). I think this is because in order to complete a OPNG WU, the CPU is working with the GPU, with the GPU doing almost all the crunching, while the little processing time contributed by the CPU is what gets counted as Run Time. (I'd include screenshots, but I haven't figured out how to do that in the Forums yet...sorry, my first post).

Is there something I need to do in order for the GPU run time to get counted, too?

Thanks for any assistance.

@ThreeCats;

Unfortunately, there's nothing to be done about this -- currently there's no consistent way for BOINC to know how much GPU time is consumed (elapsed time is not necessarily an accurate surrogate), and BOINC server internals are geared up to CPU time usage anyway...

Perhaps badges for amounts of tasks completed or for acquired credit would be more representative for GPU projects, but I doubt that's likely to happen...

Cheers - Al.

Al,

Ah, so it's "normal." No worries, the work's more important than the badges. And, thanks for the clarification - since it was my first experience with using GPUs, I thought I'd missed something.

To add, there are multiple different ways provided for you to track and evaluate your performance. CPU time is just one of them. IMO, expending resources to track GPU time isn't worth it. You can simply choose to focus on points as the important metric in this case.

Maybe hack server to count wall time instead of cpu time for gpu workunits?

Re: GPU Work Units - Post Your Tech Support Questions Here

Why doesn't WCG just show how much work is available like every other BOINC project?? Bit frustrating that.

Re: GPU Work Units - Post Your Tech Support Questions Here

Hi there.
Which projects currently have GPU work available
It seems that no matter what I do, I can't get any work unit to run on my graphics card.
My card is an Intel(R) Arc(TM) A770 using windows 10.
Is it possible I can get a work unit running on it? if so, which project has GPU work available for it?
Thanks.
