Re: OpenPandemics GPU Beta Test - Feb 18 2021 [Issues Thread]

I only received 1 Beta and it was the third time it went out. It errored out with an unhandled exception error for a memory access violation.

I can paste in the full error report if it would help, but I'd assume that the techs would already have access to it since I'm reading it from the website on my results page.

Re: OpenPandemics GPU Beta Test - Feb 18 2021 [Issues Thread]

Greetings everyone,

I'm sorry to say, but I am having a build issue at the moment and I have not been able to create a production ready version of the application. At the moment, the next round of beta is on hold while I'm still working out the issue.

Thanks,
-Uplinger

Uplinger thank you for the update. I am sure you will get to the bottom of the build problem. Look forward to the next round when everything is ready to go.

Re: OpenPandemics GPU Beta Test - Feb 18 2021 [Issues Thread]

@Falconet: Re running OPN1-GPU on Ivy Bridge HD4000 iGPU

In my previous post on this here (above) I had assumed the result from the clinfo.exe program that said only OpenCL1.1 was supported by the HD4000.
However, I just discovered that Geek3D's GPU Caps Viewer and TPU's GPU-Z both say it does OpenCL1.2. So my original question still stands:
Has anyone received any betas for an Ivy Bridge HD4000 iGPU, and what was your experience?

FWIW: I have the latest driver available from Intel: installer file win64_15.33.53.5161.exe, dated 23 Oct 2020

PS: I expect the HD4000 to be a slug compared to a discrete GPU, but it may achieve much more througput per kWh of electricity than running CPU-only. If the processor runs too hot, I will throttle the CPU multiplier.

Re: OpenPandemics GPU Beta Test - Feb 18 2021 [Issues Thread]

@Rickjb

I went looking through my intel wingmen and did not find any, but most workunits have fallen off the list already. I do remember seeing HD4200's though when I looked through some before.

I am not certain about power efficiency vs the cpu yet, since I did not put my power meter on during the beta. It does seem like it would increase the overall computation done on 2 of my computers(with UHD 620s) even with it hitting the power limit and reducing the 8 cores from 2.9GHz to 1.9GHz. So I did not have to throttle the CPU multiplier manually. Definitely a slug compared to my Nvidia RTX 2060 though!

Re: OpenPandemics GPU Beta Test - Feb 18 2021 [Issues Thread]

Be aware of, that running OpenCL WU's on your iGPU/APU, and at the same time running WU's on the CPU, will severely slow down tasks on both the iGPU, and the CPU.

That was something we discovered on SETI@home years ago. Unless the OpenCL apps here, works differently, it's not a production increasing thing to run many (if any) WU's on the CPU, if you will crunch on the iGPU/APU also.

See here enormous amounts of data from one very experienced OpenCL programmer who made many OpenCL apps for SETI@home, the posts are oldish, but afaik the conclusions are still very much valid:

http://lunatics.kwsn.info/index.php/topic,1735.0.html

Edit: I have been running some Beta tasks here on my iGPU HD4600, and it works as expected. I can't say more than that, since you can't directly compare the larger GPU tasks with many more "jobs", to the CPU tasks with just a few "jobs". More WU's are needed before any more conclusions can be made.
