We tested on two points on two levels:
1) We had very similar individual computers run a workunit via the Windows agent and via the Linux agent. This suggested a factor of 10 difference. 2) We took a look at the points per hour earned across all of the World Community Grid and the points per hour earned by the Beta testers (we were generating about 60 days of run time per day). This was in agreement of the factor of 10 difference. The UD benchmark looks at several factors from CPU power, Memory, etc while BOINC looks at just flops. As a result there will be some people who earn more points and some who earn less points under one or the other system. It would not be possible to make it exactly the same - our goal instead was to make it as fair as possible. I'm sure some will disagree - but I think we got pretty close (and I'm sure there will be many threads devoted to this topic ) As far as validation goes - both the results returned by the Windows agents and the Linux agents will be validated. This is absolutely necessary in a public computing project like this in order to ensure the validity of the scientific results. We are using similar policies on both systems (they have differences in the way they are configured which means that it is not identical but similar). The stats xml files are located at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/stats/ We have not yet had any workunits validated so no users have earned credit yet. Thus the files are currently empty. This should change in the near future. |

Cause what i noticed is that Intel systems do very good in boinc's benchmark (as good as corresponding AMD systems) but in the UD benchmarking system AMD's seem to perform way better then the Intels. I don't realy know wich realy calculates faster anyway. UD/grid.org/WCG makes heavy use of the floating point unit. AMDs have a better FPU so calculate better with UD/grid.org/wcg. Perhaps the boincers (boinkers) use more integer arithmetic so the Intels come out better over there. I dunno. That's only a guess.

As a user of BOINC since it was created I can quite confidentally say it is one of the easiest programs to work and sign up to it leads you in every process.
----------------------------------------you find people who just start on the BOINC client coming from somewhere else for example SETI Classic have a moan and sulk for a few days and they say it is rubbish this is because they dont read into BOINC to get a basic understanding and they dont give it a chance to do anything. I know people who have given it a week and have said it is better even though they hated it in the 1st place. BOINC client is updated every now and then to fix bugs and put in extra functionality, and the server software is updated every now and again but thats a natural progression for any software. Also looking forward to seeing a Windowsclient I know some developers have found it takes longer to produce a BOINC client compared to LINUX. As for the ways credit work with the exsisting system good on ya for keeping it the BOINC way, maybe one day UD will be gone forever and BOINC will rule. Im sure there will be an outcry from UD users but you will find the BOINC users flock to it as they always like a new project to play with. |

What halifax said would be nice for boinc crunchers who do multiple projects. Take a look at how Climate Prediction did it.
----------------------------------------www.climateprediction.net (Boinc pages can be found under mycp.net ==> boinc pages) But for me the integration in the normal page is fine too... (And looks nice!) Then about the benchmark thing, i guess you're right you can't ever have a perfect measerument. I do know that boinc keeps integer speed and floating operations speed in mind when calculating credits. However i've read on the maillist at some point they may be changing this to something that measures the real computation done, that would be very accurate. Anyway great work already on the linux client guys. We should think about that too besides giving all these comments (The comments are only to try and help you, you know) Edit: Another quick question. Will there be the possibility on the boinc platform to chose on what project you will work on when there are multiple projects running? While I would join WCG if they had a Windows BOINC client, all of my machines have enough work to keep the CPUs warm, and I will not join if there is not a BOINC Windows client.

John --
We will look forward to your participation then sometime in the future when the BOINC Windows support is implemented. Best regards, |

I don't know why I didnt mention CPDN earlier I forgot about it. |

As I understand at this point of time there's no way to transfer an existing WCG account to BOINC because no client for BOINC has been prepared yet.
Please somebody tell me if I understand well and when can we expect to be able to run the WCG on BOINC. Thank you very much. |

Yes, the WCG runs a Boinc Linux x86 client. WCG does not run a BOINC Windows x86 client.

I still have some questions. Why do you let the boinc system validate workunits and don't do that (as far as i know) for the windows system? We do perform results validation for the windows system. However, BOINC posts your points afterwards rather than immediately. |
