Kevin
With the lead generation at 105, there would be 412 units currently classified as extreme laggards. Issuing 3 copies of those would mean 412 redundant results each generation. It would speed up the laggards but it would slow down the overall project. Could the extreme laggards not be confined to the fastest machines and those machines be kept away from the leading generations? That would speed up the laggards without slowing down the project. I was thinking in terms of machines returning results within, say, 18 hours, rather than the current definition of 2 days, or whatever you are currently using. Mike |

Can you assign the extreme laggards to the fastest returning machines (mine isn't the fastest I'm sure) or a specific machine. Unfortunately BOINC does not provide a mechanism that would make this possible without some not-trivial work. However, we really appreciate the offer to be able to use your machines in this way. In the longer term we will have to look at how BOINC can be setup to have "anchor" machines that can be easily used in this way as a mechanism beyond the "reliable" mechanism. There are currently 62 units that are considered extreme laggards. Within 10 days this will drop to about 22 and within 20 days there will only be the 6 units that are far behind. It would speed up the laggards but it would slow down the overall project. Only generation 81 and earlier are classified as extreme laggards. As the extreme laggards are clustered very close to 81 the number of units classified as extreme laggards is going to drop rapidly over the next few days. As a result the impact on the project will be extremely small while the impact on the date the project finishes will be significant. [Edit 1 times, last edit by knreed at Oct 22, 2021 1:34:20 PM] |

Additionally, There world probably be a risk of focusing work on too few machines. If one became non-functional for any reason, it could create problems for the project. |

Sorry, my earlier post about 412 extreme laggards was a reading of the wrong column on my spreadsheet. The correct figure was 59, which is a minimal loss to the project, especially as it should reduce quite quickly to just the 6 tailenders.

I also agree I am not receiving tasks apart from a 098_2 with 3.5 day deadline. I hope it is fixed by tomorrow too, not at the expense of anybody's time off as it will be most likely be Saturday for Kevin and other techs
