i7-5960X...isn't that 8 cores, 16 threads? Yes you are absolutely correct I have updated my original post. Thanks for pointing it out [Edit 1 times, last edit by Speedy51 at Apr 12, 2019 3:38:56 AM] |

Thanks to all who wrote about how long my laptop is taking to process ZIKA work units.
I downloaded and installed CPUID HWMonitor to check both the speed and the temps of the CPU. Yes, the CPU is running at 1/3 its max speed despite the cooling pad. In my analysis, the only way I can increase the cooling ability is to use a system that comes equipped with a liquid cooler. Cooling via air is just not that efficient. And storing your laptop in a frezzer is just not practical. :-)) Clive |

If you are up in Canada, can't you put it out on the porch or in the garage. It's still pretty cold outside.

This may not be very practical, but you could mount it upside down with the cooling pad attached to the bottom. With cooling pad sending its coolness down and the laptop sending its heat up, you may gain a little bit. The basic problem is that most laptops are not designed to run at 100% cpu for any length of time. The only other thing I could mention is to get all the dust bunnies out of it and make sure none of the vents are blocked and the fan is working properly.

I just aborted a whole bevy of units that were just going in circles on a Galaxy 10. They have been running for days, yet only had 5 hours logged on 1 job. The log shows countless restarts on the same task for all that I checked. What a waste of my time.

I know the project will end soon but there is still annoying trouble with stuck work units that everlasts. Just a good example of how processing power was wasted on this project (knowing it happened not only on my machine).
----------------------------------------On the first picture you can clearly see 3 stuck units runnig for nothing for almost 2 days and one more following their path (5+ hours and going up): https://imgur.com/a/L6gYIgy On the second picture how it is after killing the client process and relaunching it. Clearly, it wasn't a visual bug as some one suggested before - units just proceed to be done from the point where they had stuck: https://imgur.com/a/ldfPHxV Such a shame for resources wasting without proper adressing the issure...

What operating system are you using ? I have had this "churning" happen only a couple of times during my 13 + years here and each time it occurred on a Windows machine. It has never happened on a Linux machine. If I recall what I was told, it is due to a memory problem when some memory in use is not released properly by the operating system. Cheers

Cheers Windows 7 machine is where I have this problem now and then. Another machine which runs Windows 10 never had such an issure from what I can recall. It might be some memory issure indeed. That being said, all my computers have plenty of RAM, and I can't link memory shortage instances and these WU's "freezings" either. Even if it is due to a memory allocation issure, this happens only with Zika units. There were Ebola units few times as far as I remember but only shortly. Even if OS doesn't sort out Zika units properly, it still somehow manages to do it right with other projects. So I would assume some error or flaw in WU's design or client-side issure somehow related as well.

Even if it is due to a memory allocation issure, this happens only with Zika units. The problem has nothing to do with the amount of memory, just with the access to certain blocks of memory. If the application is attempting to use the same block of memory as a completed unit and the completed unit has not properly released the memory upon completion, the application will continue to try to access memory which is still flagged as "in use" when it really is not. Apparently for you, it only happens in the applications which use the Vina application. Cheers
