Re: 24 Hour Deadline too Short

The deadlines are really short. I own a high end pc which doesn't have any problems crunching any other project very long before the end of the deadline. The deadlines sometimes are really random. Last night i got a project with a deadline of about 5 hours, which my intel-i7-4710 wasn't able to calculate on time even by non stop crunching. I would really appreciate if the deadlines were a bit longer.

Re: 24 Hour Deadline too Short

I agree. The FAAH2 project tasks become high priority and push other projects aside. Therefore, I'm deactivating this project to allow for a more even playing field for all the other projects.

Re: 24 Hour Deadline too Short

I think the solution this situation is to make up your mind to have specific machine/s run this project only. Then there will be no interference with other projects. The machine you use will need to able to complete the work units in the given amount of time you allow the machine to run. If the computer is fast enough to complete work units in the time allowed, no problem. If not then just chose another project for that computer.

Personally, I think the time alloted is too short, but I am not the person that set this time limit.

I have noticed that completed work units are slow to be removed from the Results Status page, I don't know what the procedure is for removing completed work units. But I have a couple units completed on the 3rd that are still listed. So why the quick turnaround?

I run two computers for this project only, till I get to the completed time I want. Then I will run cooperating project/s.

Re: 24 Hour Deadline too Short

FWIW: the boinc client will run tasks in Earliest Deadline First once the time remaining to the task deadline is shorter than half of the "store at least X days of work" setting.

If I'm getting this right, I have to set that setting to double of the task completion time plus any other interruptions (I switch off the computer at night). That means 3+8=11 hours in my case, double that and it's 22h.

I've been running "store at least 1 days of work" for a day now and all the FA@H 2 tasks that are downloaded are started instantly.

I know it's not a perfect solution but it now at least most of that tasks are finishing within the deadline.

Re: 24 Hour Deadline too Short

How do you get the client to automatically begin the most pressing project unit? I find that I've missed some deadlines for this project, since other projects seem to begin automatically and they have a much longer deadline.

Normally BOINC will process the tasks FIFO (First In First Out),
except when BOINC calculates later arrived tasks could get deadline troubles.
You can force the 24-hours deadline tasks to start immediately after arrival by setting
the minimum workbuffer to 1 day and best no additional buffer.

Re: 24 Hour Deadline too Short

How do I set which projects I want a specific workstation to work on? Do I need to create two profiles... One that is exclusively FAH2 and another profile that works on other sub-projects other than FAH2? My issue is the rotation of sub-projects since BOINC seems to only work on one subproject. If the CPU is not maxed out, then it will add more duplicate sub-projects. I too don't like the one day deadline. Rather than 1 day workbuffer, I resorted to having 0 day buffer and let it download tasks as needed. I have good network connection so not adding tasks beforehand should give me more time for FAH2?

Re: 24 Hour Deadline too Short

Crystal Pellet, would that be under the "store at least __ days of work" and "store up to an additional __ days of work" in the Computing Preferences part of the BOINC program?

Yes, that's the place to set your work buffer.
