The N1 looks interesting. It is a hex vs the xu4 being an octo, but it is more powerful. Do you have a source on this ? I have 2 Odroid Xu4 and would like to add more in the future so I'm interested in N1 but I've computed the MIPS and the result is not encouraging... I've computed the MIPS for Odroid XU4 (4 A15 @2GHz + 4 A53 @1.4GHz) and got 38,64 MM but only 32,6 MM for N1 (2 A72 @2 + 4 A53 @1.5) :-| MIPS taken from here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ARM_microarchitectures ![]() |

https://odroidinc.com/blogs/news/odroid-n1-the-next-odroid shows the benchmark results Odroid published and they claim "The performance was not significantly different from XU4". Your MIPS ratings for the XU4 assume you can run the big cores at 2.0GHz all the time, which I have not found to be true, because it will overheat and throttle itself. Try running your numbers again at 1.9GHz or 1.8GHz for the big cores then see how the MIPS compare. You can use the CPU-Z app to see what speed your XU4 cores are running at in real time. I believe the N1 chip will cool better because of the metal package and it has fewer cores generating heat, so it may be able to run all the cores at their top speeds all the time. |

@smeyer55
----------------------------------------thank you for the suggestion: lowering the freq to 1.8 for the big cores brings the result for the Odroid xu4 to 35,84. This value is still higher than the one of N1 - 32,6. For our needs (WCG) as we use only the CPU this means paying 2x for the same MIPS as xu4 is 59$ and N1 approx 120$. Price estimate taken from here for N1 - https://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=29932 Price for Xu4 - https://www.hardkernel.com/main/products/prdt_info.php Didn't have time to check the CPU-Z but will do it one of these days. ![]() |

Can't a usb fan be blown on the odroid? i bought a usb artic cooler fan for $8 which is fairly quiet and keeps my USB ASIC cool enough to overclock.

I got some fans on ebay -smth like these link They are not USB powered but could be powered using the GPIO of the XU4 (configuration in this link https://goo.gl/images/z1GyWj) ![]() |

Can't a usb fan be blown on the odroid? i bought a usb artic cooler fan for $8 which is fairly quiet and keeps my USB ASIC cool enough to overclock. I have mine in a box that is effectively a wind tunnel, with a 120mm fan pushing air over the odroids, and a 120mm fan pulling the "warm" air out. I also have oversized heatsinks attached with thermal paste, and a noctua 40mm 5v fan on top of the heatsink. Often, the 40mm fan is not even running, because the thermals hover around 60C and the odroid does not feel the need to run it. Short of dropping it into mineral oil, it is as cool as it is going to get for me. |

Odroid N1 project suspended. N2 is considered but no details offered yet...
----------------------------------------"At this moment, we can NOT disclose the information about the newer SoC due to the NDA with the chip manufacturer. I think we can unveil the N2 specification and test results by end of August and start the mass production in September." Rather than pay a premium on best model, perhaps second generation processor will provide better value and I can pick up a cluster.

Anyone have experience with the NanoPi products running Android for WCG? I have been looking at the Fire3 model.

The Fire3 looks interesting and the price is low.
My concern would be that 1GB of memory isn't very much for 8 cores. You may not be able to run all the cores at once without running out of memory. The heat sink won't be able to keep it cool running all cores at 100% without adding a fan or going with a larger heat sink. |
