Re: Efficient cruncher build

Hopefully shipping is fast :)
If your experiment turns out to be as efficient as it sounds, I may add some pis to my workers. The odroids are nice, but if the pi systems are cheaper and just as efficient, I'll give them a go.

Unfortunately it seems like shipping won't be very fast, because the Chinese New Year is on for a few days more and they didn't send the parcel before they left for celebration. I guess it will be sent out at around Feb 26th or so.

Will be great to try it out and see what efficiency and performance can be had from the Banana Pi M3 though once it arrives!

Re: Efficient cruncher build

UPDATE:
I have received the stack now :)
Will probably buy extension standoffs to be able to fit a higher heatsink when I have more than one singe-board computer in the stack.

Re: Efficient cruncher build

I hope you succeed flodisar. I was able to get WCG running on my Tinkerboard using Android. I had to install the apk for Boinc manually.

Re: Efficient cruncher build

Looks great! I love the kids dinner place settings :)
If you have an amazon account, I ordered standoff extensions for my odroids from there, and they were fairly inexpensive. It was a kit that came with several different sizes lengths too.
Looking forward to the finished build, and hoping it will produce some impressive numbers. If so, I'll think about doing the same. But for now, my odroids have been producing some good stats for me on SCC.

These are the ones I ordered: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XQ33Y9X/...o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Re: Efficient cruncher build

Thanks! Well, I like hippos :)

And thanks for the link to the standoffs, it would be great (only, the shipping till be $20+ to Sweden, but I will look for a similar kit).

Sure, would be great if this turns out well and if you also build it, we'll see how it will perform :)

Re: Efficient cruncher build

Shipping kind of kills that deal then. I'm sure you can find something with cheaper shipping. If you can't find taller standoffs, just go to your local computer parts store and buy a bunch of smaller standoffs, and screw them together for however tall you need them to be.

Re: Efficient cruncher build

So let's say you but 10 Banana Pi M3s. Thats $750 (although I think you might get a discount when buying 10). And then some power adapters and stacks, perhaps some fans. Let's round that up to $1000.

You get 80 cores @ ~100W + fan wattage It would be a nice project and fairly efficient. :)

I got 80 cores @1GHz 32W for $500 (maybe even as low as $400 since the stick was on promotion for $35), see link from my signature

In your case I would recommend a linux distro so that you can use wine/boinctasks for better management

Re: Efficient cruncher build

Thanks for the replies!
Yeah, the shipping status from China said "shipping cancelled" and I got a refund from the seller (this is due to Swedish Postal Service now introducing rediculous fees for non-EU parcels and the Chinese Post and sellers don't want to handle lots of returned goods due to this).

So I bought it from a Swedish site instead (a bit more expensive than from China) and I included standoffs too. However, now I got an email from the store saying that the items are not in stock and it will take about 5 weeks for them to arrive. So, unfortunately I am not having the best of luck with the logiostics at the moment :(
I'll just have to wait I guess...

Re: Efficient cruncher build

I can't get the 2GHz processors to run at the full 2GHz, even though thermals are in the low 60C range.

May I ask how much one XU4 is running wattage wise with 100% utilization (or near max) for all 8 cores? I'm reading various information online. The best I can gather is about 15W. Are you getting about 250 RAC for one XU4 unit?
