Alrighty guys, here is the result of the Ryzen 1700 running on Windows for 11 days:
----------------------------------------![]() Of course the dates are not correct, I was lazy :-) I didn't change anything on the configuration and let Windows run with the same projects as Linux. Overall Windows has got a PPD loss of about 6%. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by RoundFour at Jan 4, 2018 7:37:18 PM] |

Interesting results! Which projects are mainly run? I would guess MCM? Because on the VINA projects (SCC, Zika, OET, FAH) I would expect the difference to be larger.

All projects except MIP.

Nice comparison chart!
----------------------------------------I am looking into "Banana Pi M3" single board computers to maybe load Android or some other lightweight Linux onto. http://www.banana-pi.org/m3.html I like this one because you get 8 real cores (not in big.LITTLE configuration if I am not mistaken) @ 1.8GHz and 2GB RAM. It runs off of a 5V / 2A power supply, so 10W would be the worst-case scenario. It costs around $75/piece: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Banana-pi-M3/...479&priceBeautifyAB=0 Then one can buy a matching stack for it (depending on how high cooler one would like for it since it is going to crunch WCG WUs): https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4-layer-Trans...479&priceBeautifyAB=0 So let's say you but 10 Banana Pi M3s. Thats $750 (although I think you might get a discount when buying 10). And then some power adapters and stacks, perhaps some fans. Let's round that up to $1000. You get 80 cores @ ~100W + fan wattage It would be a nice project and fairly efficient. :) ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz |

So it would have to be android. http://www.banana-pi.org/m3-download.html Let me know how you get along with setting up android. I would guess you would need a heatsink for the cpu, or else I would guess it will throttle itself real quick. I saw these as accessories on the site you linked, but they look pretty lightweight if the cpu is going to be 100% 24/7. I would look for something with a little more heatspreading capabilities. I run two odroid xu4 systems with android, they seem to be similar to the Pi M3 in that they are octocore but in the big.LITTLE architecture. I believe 4 cores run at 2GHz, and 4 run at 1.4GHz. |

Thanks for good points! Yes, I was thinking about sawing heatsink blocks out of an AMD or Intel standard aluminium cooler and attaching with heatsink plaster that will both glue and transfer heat at the same time + put fans blowing through the stack. I believe the most important thing is that air is moving, then the heatsink will become much more effective. The odroid-systems in big.LITTLE - do they run 4 WUs then at a time or 8? Right now this project is on the idea stage but I am hoping to buy a first unit in the near future. I shall keep you updated when I do :) ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz |

Sorry for the delay in the answer (dealing with frozen pipes all weekend. Got cold here 1*F/-17*C) . Yes the odroid xu4 runs 8 workunits at a time. 4 run ~1.8GHz and 4 run at ~1.4GHz. I have aftermarket heatsinks, noctua 40mm 5v fans on top of the heatsinks, and both are in a box that have 120mm intake/echaust fans in a push-pull design that creates kind of a wind tunnel over the odroids. I can't get the 2GHz processors to run at the full 2GHz, even though thermals are in the low 60C range. 1.8-1.9 is about the best I can manage. Before swapping out the heatsinks, performance was horrible with the stock one and thermals were in the high 80C range with lots of throttling on the 2GHz chip.
----------------------------------------Edit: I should also mention that with the 120mm fans, a lot of times I see the small 40mm noctua fan spin down due to the temps not being high enough to need it. This is with 100% utilization. Good luck with the project. I look forward to seeing the results. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 8, 2018 1:07:45 PM] |

Thanks for the reply, -17C is cold, I hope you got all the pipes sorted out!

Hi, Keeping you up-to date as promised :) I have ordered one Banana Pi M3 unit and a stack to mount it on (plan is to mount more of them later on if this test-run is successful. I expect shipping to be about a month or so. Waiting anxiously :) ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz |

Hopefully shipping is fast :)
If your experiment turns out to be as efficient as it sounds, I may add some pis to my workers. The odroids are nice, but if the pi systems are cheaper and just as efficient, I'll give them a go. |
