Re: Off-line crunching

That phone with "bad pillow battery" was not a crunching phone at all and only in regular use without any distributed computing programs installed on it. A very old model made by Nokia, bad charger I suspect.

I call them "devices" since my tips may apply to some other types or them too. I'm aware of computers, phones, tablets, TV-boxes and TV-sticks that can crunch WCG. I guess Android TV's can crunch too and maybe some other devices running Android, but I just don't know too much about Android things after all.

You should not need SIM card or subscription. My full time phone crunchers run just fine without them. You can use your home's wifi to transfer workunits.

The mermaid with respect to her ponderings of [Sep 3, 2017 4:57:38 PM], may want to inspect those 'advanced preferences' again, and do an "oh, ah, that's why indeed". Certainly, I would not want a crunching phone near anyware the posterity parts, most notably not when it pertains a Samsung of the 7 series wink, considering that the medical optimal temperature is 34C.

Thank you for your concern for my "derriƩre parisienne" SekeRob****
(I gave you three more stars, so you are a 4-star general now to me)
- I'm a Sony woman, and a Sony doesn't scorch ladies when it sits in their back pockets wink

No more ponderings
- on to business:
Halo Jones, my old mobile phone is a "device" now. I really didn't have the time to play with it ... but the challenge was too exciting. I found my tweezers and pulled out that old SIM-card, and now I was onto something, managed to get it hooked up with my wi-fi, downloaded Boinc (the first one was bad, wouldn't accept my log in, so trashed that and downloaded a new and friendlier one) and I'm up and running more or less.
It has too little RAM for running OpenZika; how it evaluates other projects it keeps secret for me. It demands to remain plugged in at all times even as I set it to compute on battery. And - whoooaa! - now it downloaded one Ebola WU.

When I return from the States, I'll play some more with it, and ask you a million questions.

If I may say so myself:
No small feat for one little old lady, eh?

Thank you for your inspiring me, Halo Jones
(have no time for the florist now, so please share these chocolates with the caring ****general)

Re: Off-line crunching

I have never used android crunching but it might happen when I upgrade the S3

Heat: In the car attach to air vent or if really adventurous find a way to attach to door mirror

Walking... I wonder if a freezer pack might work to some degree or a small fan

Battery life: Consider a power bank for use when not plugged into the mains.
There are some 4 and 6 cell Kits on ebay that you just insert 18650 cells into but read the output amps at the usb port(s) info carefully.

With the cells themselves you choose between cheap advertised as 5000mA/h that are nowhere near that and do not last too many charges or expensive cells from known manufacturers with known discharge rates so the ideal cell can be selected for this

Re: Off-line crunching

Thank you, OldChap.
I do have an adventurous arrangement on my dashboard, but I see what you mean about getting some cooling, which has not been an issue pre-BOINC.

Also, I have two power banks which I need when walking with GPS in cities. Even that they are not particularly good at. I really need something better.

I'll get back to these issues when I return from my planned trip.

wink I'm sure you can lift a chocolate without Halo Jones and SekeRob**** noticing ....

If you want to explore the idea of using 18650 cells after you get back, let me know so that I can point you at the better cells for this purpose

mmmm..... Tasty

Re: Off-line crunching

Halo Jones, just to let you know that my old Sony Xperia e has uploaded his first WU, and is happily crunching his second. His specs are modest, but he's dependable. He says his life is much better now and asks me to thank you.
I named him Mr. Jones

Sorry, I let OldChap sample your chocolates yesterday blushing

Re: Off-line crunching

Nice to hear you have a "new" cruncher saving humanity. :) The latest phone I got donated is very similar by specs; single core 0.5GB device (Samsung S5280). Surely not the most powerful crucher on Earth, but very cute and now hard-working, and I like it a lot. Maybe working on its 8th workunit now. :)
I'm just happy to share the chocolates with OldChap, SekeRob, and others!

Re: Off-line crunching

Halo Jones, thought I would give you some feedback and an update.
Thanks to your informing me on my option for managing the workload being sent to my current Sony Xperia android, I have been able to crunch quite a bit at nights while away from home without missing any of the deadlines and still be able to use my GPS to its fullest at daytime.
As far a my old Sony Xperia (Mr Jones) goes, I could tell that he had pulled out of the workplace after finishing just one single WU. I couldn't investigate anything from a distance. Upon returning home I found that the event log told me he was insufficient in almost all respects.
I deleted and deactivated as much as I could, and I was happy to see it resulted in him being granted a WU, which he finished, and as a recognition of his willingness to work he was then sent two new ones, and he's chewing along happily. I think he'll do well for a while, and he loves this life. Again.
He cannot crunch unless he's connected to a power source, though, even as I tick the battery option in the settings. That option is red, probably indicating that it shall not work for Mr Jones.
So have you started your android cell phone manual yet?

OldChap, I brought two power banks with me on my trip. One seemed almost to suck the last power out of my cell phone instead of charging, so I threw that out along with all the little hotel shampoos and body lotions I tend to hoard in order to close in on the carry-on weight limit for the plane. The other one seems pretty reliable. It's a SilverCrest from Lidl.
It says "Battery 3.7V, 5000mAh, 18.5Wh".
So, what do you think I should get to supplement that one?
Low weight is a factor as I carry it in my shoulder bag along with a lot of other stuff needed when walking.
