Snooze doesn't suspend work

Something must have been changed on my computer recently. When I click snooze in the taskbar icon (or suspend in the BOINC Manager) the manager shows all tasks suspended but in the process explorer both jobs are still active and keeping the CPUs busy.

I'm thinking some other program changed something because I had not changed anything in BOINC. I did download the installer today and ran it thinking it might fix this, but it didn't help. If it matters, this is on a Dell Opti 740 dual-core computer running XP SP3. Running BOINC ver. 7.6.33 when problem noticed and 7.8.2 now - no VirtualBox.

Re: Snooze doesn't suspend work

Whilst you uninstalled and installed a BETA version, did you observe the task processes disappeared too from the Task Manager listing?

Task apps not stopping means most often, that they got disconnected from the client in some way, gone orphan, zombie, calling for a boot to clean up the environment.

Re: Snooze doesn't suspend work

Beta? Didn't think I was running a beta version. Also the problem didn't start after an install or update. I did the update today to try to fix the problem. Also I watched and the work tasks did disappear from the process explorer during the update.

Now I didn't do an uninstall - reinstall because I didn't know if that would dump all the incomplete tasks. Are they deleted if Boinc is uninstalled? I just told it no new tasks so it empties out. Then I might try uninstalling completely and then reinstall. Unless there's better ideas.

Re: Snooze doesn't suspend work

Unless you saw an announcement in the event log while running 7.6.33 or see 'recommended' over at the Berkeley download page, you are now running 7.8.2 beta test version. Installing a new version first uninstalls the previous version without asking you., the client not the tasks in progress. Would not vouch for anything on XP, but it smells like something is interfering with the RPC localhost communication. Could รจ.g. be hyperactive security software.

I thought I saw a note yesterday or the day before where David Anderson released the 7.8.2 version for production....

Re: Snooze doesn't suspend work

Very indeed, Message 80762 - Posted: 5 Sep 2017, 11:02:09 UTC, well into my shuteye time. biggrin That out of the way, nobody seemed to have reported snooze/suspend issues with previous and brand new 'recommended' (been running it since a few days for testing other issues related to W10 and client going into permanent suspend, but only when the Task Manager is open on the 'Details' tab. That problem still continues into W10 build 16781.1000, and is very likely a W10 problem... since they're funking with the screensaver as well (ambiguous language suggesting they're ripping out the function all together, just a lock screen, some reporting the BOINC SS wont work anymore under W10, it's seemingly very WIP).

Re: Snooze doesn't suspend work

BTW, supposedly, IIRC, the event log message would not appear until 14 days after, to give it time for the eager early birds to break it and report... this being the first 7.8 release.

7.8.2 seems to have been retracted as 'recommended' (they forgot to ask my OK ;)))))). Anyway, the Berkeley download button now shows a redirect to 7.6.33 again
