Adri,
Thanks for posting the answers, which matched my final efforts :-) Whilst I got the vertical answer almost at once, I eventually got the final horizontal answers once Sgt. Joe gave me "Holy See" (which I hadn't thought of at all, partly because I'd been thinking of 7 letter words, not answers with two words...) Once again, thanks for an interesting puzzle! Cheers - Al. P.S. for Sgt. Joe -- the two-letter codes are supposedly based on the country's name in its own language; I think the transliteration of the native name of Belarus ends with a Y :-) |

This weekend's puzzle is a … brace yourself … Letter Sudoku. An easy one.
----------------------------------------In this Letter Sudoku, the objective is to fill the 9 × 9 grid with letters so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3 × 3 subgrids that compose the grid contain all the letters from the two words WCG and RESULT - as every result counts on World Computing Grid, isn't it? ![]() There is only one solution for this partially completed grid. ┏━━━━━━━┯━━━━━━━┯━━━━━━━┳━━━━━━━┯━━━━━━━┯━━━━━━━┳━━━━━━━┯━━━━━━━┯━━━━━━━┓Good luck! Interesting little variation on the traditional sudoku. I will not post the solution as I think others should have some fun with this one. i would not necessarily classified this as easy, but perhaps tending towards medium. I enjoyed the challenge.

Adri,
Another nice puzzle, with a nice choice of letters -- many thanks! it took me about the same time as I would usually spend on a Medium number puzzle (although in this case that included the time spent making a grid on paper for somewhere to solve it!). As it doesn't usually take me much longer to do a Moderate one than an Easy one and I usually already have a grid for solving I guess the "Easy" assessment wasn't too far off... I definitely found it a bit harder to focus on working with letters rather than numbers -- if there's a next time for this, I'll translate to 1..9, solve and then translate back :-) Cheers - Al. |

Focusing on the letters is a bit disconcerting at the beginning, but after a bit you get used to it.

Last weekend I posted a Letter Sudoku. Here is the solution:
┏━━━━━━━┯━━━━━━━┯━━━━━━━┳━━━━━━━┯━━━━━━━┯━━━━━━━┳━━━━━━━┯━━━━━━━┯━━━━━━━┓ I mean, these are of course the words WCG and RESULT that were hidden there and became visible once you had solved the Sudoku. (Is WCG a word? Yes, here on the forum it is a well-known abbreviation. ![]() Thank you for participating! Adri |

Adri,
Thanks for the answer - to my relief, it matched what I got :-) Much fun, once I'd got my head around thinking letters instead of digits! Cheers - Al. |

Al,
Just creating this puzzle wasn't as easy as I had thought. When I started it, I was using some other hidden word (not WCG and RESULT), but this led to a few unwanted letter combinations (do I say too much mentioning COMPUTING? ![]() Let me finish by saying that a new puzzle will follow soon. Adri |

For this weekend's puzzle I was inspired by the news of last week.
----------------------------------------Word ladder 1 From TRUMP to BIDEN. With each step, the next word must be derived from the former one and have exactly one letter changed. While changing one letter, it is allowed to change the order of the letters at the same time. Only common English words are allowed. Try to use as few steps as you can. TRUMPetc. ..... Now that was easy, isn't it? Let's do another one with differing rules. Word ladder 2 From TRUMP to BIDEN (again). With each step, the next word must be derived from the former one and have exactly one letter changed. It is NOT allowed to change the order of the letters. Only common English words are allowed. Try to use as few steps as you can. TRUMPetc. ..... Now that it is forbidden to change the order of the letters, we can do another variation. Word ladder 3 From TRUMP to BIDEN (yes, again). With each step, the next word must be derived from the former one and have exactly one letter less or more OR have one letter changed if there's only one letter left. You may only either add or remove ONE letter. So it is NOT allowed to change the order of the letters. Only common English words are allowed. Try to use as few steps as you can. TRUMPetc. ..... Enough for now, isn't it? ![]() Good luck, Adri [Edit 5 times, last edit by adriverhoef at Apr 29, 2023 10:45:07 AM] |

Adri,
----------------------------------------I don't tend to do word ladder puzzles (more a crosswords and sudoko fan...) but... I think I can get from TRUMP to BIDEN the first way with 7 intermediate words, and for the second way I have managed with 13 intermediate words; fewer might be possible, but I'll settle for those for now :-) The third case, however... Can you confirm my understanding that the rules mean that if I wanted to turn [say] CART into CAST I have to go CART -> CAT -> CAST... Thanks for another thought provoker -- I've already spent longer on this one than any of the previous ones, which may or may not be a good thing...:-) Cheers - Al.
