Adri,
Re the hint: I'd got there eventually, once I realized that the notes I'd made had got a couple of the vertical letters in the wrong order :-) However, I'm still at a loss about no. 7 (see), which will probably turn out to be obvious when I see the full answers (which I await with interest!) Once again, thanks for another interesting puzzle! Cheers - Al. |

All right, I have waited as long as I can and have made no progress on the total solution. So, here is what I have so far.
----------------------------------------Across 1. Estonia 2. Hungary 3. Tunisia 4. Romania 5. Liberia 6. Croatia 7. Holy See 8. Germany 9. Vietnam 10. ??????? 11. Ecuador 12. Denmark 13. Moldova or Morocco 14. Vanuatu 15. Ireland or Finland or Iceland 16. Algeria or Albania I don't claim them all to be correct as obviously the vertical answer does not make any sense, at least to me. Progress on any further answers is at a standstill. Cheers

One more hint, before I'll post the answers (tomorrow). Here goes:
----------------------------------------Sgt.Joe, your answers 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 12 are correct. Adri [Edit 1 times, last edit by adriverhoef at Apr 20, 2023 6:22:10 PM] |

[Edit] I had just finished posting my answer when I saw Adri had made another post, so I've withdrawn my answer for now in case Sgt. Joe wants to have another go...
----------------------------------------If he does, here's another hint -- it's all about Europe, as Adri hinted with "This puzzle is all about you, Rop." :-) Cheers - Al. [Edit 1 times, last edit by alanb1951 at Apr 20, 2023 6:47:35 PM] |

" you, Rop" OK, I get it.
----------------------------------------I am probably still missing something as I am operating off of this list which has all the 7 letter countries of Europe. From this I surmise the answer to #13 is Moldova and the answer to #16 is Albania. The answer to #5 is either Belarus or Belgium. I do not see the criteria met in this list for #'s 5, 9, 10, 11. I could use Croatia again for #14. #15 is still a tossup among Andorra, Finland and Ireland or Iceland. The only other thing I can think of is there are possibly alternate spelling for some of the countries of which I am unaware. Albania Andorra Armenia Austria Belarus Belgium Croatia Cyprus Czechia (Czech Republic) Denmark Estonia Finland Georgia Germany Holy See Hungary Iceland Ireland Moldova Romania Ukraine Cheers

the answer to #13 is Moldova and the answer to #16 is Albania. That's correct. BTW, I hope it's not driving you crazy! (that's not a hint) Adri |

The main theme of this puzzle was: names of European countries (with exactly seven letters).
----------------------------------------All horizontal answers can be found here: https://www.worldometers.info/geography/how-many-countries-in-europe/ The last one there, with the least number of inhabitants, is the Holy See. ANSWERS
Was it difficult? Actually, the first hint was that I wrote: "all about you, Rop", all about Europe. All of the names of Rop's friends, and all other words with three or more letters, form the first or last few letters of a country name; the other words - with only two letters, and, once capitalized - are the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes for the country, e.g. The Netherlands = NL (that's the answer in the marked column), or, if you leave them in lowercase and put a dot in front of them, they represent the country code top-level domains: .is, .be, .ie, .by, .ad, .at There was one country missing here: UKRAINE. Obviously, this means that Raine was one of Rop's friends. I think Rop will be mad at me for not naming her. Thank you for participating! An interesting puzzle. I was not the least bit familiar with ISO-1366-1 alpha-2 codes. I had thought about country code top level domains, but just did not see a recognizable pattern there, which now becomes rather obvious. I did figure out the vertical column should be "The Netherlands" but could not get the second to the last letter to go along with the final letter of "L". None of the possibilities for #15 (Ireland, Andorra, Finland or England) would register as making sense. I did figure out #5 and #10 would be Belgium and Belarus respectively as that would make the vertical column work. I still did not associate "by" with Belarus except maybe it had something to do with the former spelling of Byelorussia.
----------------------------------------Obscure clues, but nonetheless interesting. Thanks for putting it out there to stimulate my brain. Cheers
