@gazza-911
----------------------------------------Cancer is a common goal to rally behind and people like protecting kids, so *fingers crossed* they'll have better luck once COVID retreats. But as I am not a scientist, that is all I have to go by. ![]() |

There will still be a lot of research on COVID-19 until they have a vaccine, probably in about a year.

No mini-update for SCC1 this month? ![]() Thomas, we haven't had our monthly call with them yet. The calls happen on different days (not on the same day) so that we can accommodate all the researchers' schedules. Thanks Caitlin for this reply and thanks for the mini-update ![]() |

We just had a call with most of the research team.
1. They talked very briefly about one of the interactions they're looking for between targets and potential treatments, specifically an interaction that would suggest that the potential treatment would have limited toxicity to human cells. 2. They're continuing to work on identifying potential new targets for us and will have a smaller researcher meeting soon to make a decision on their direction. 3. One of the researchers is sending data on two compounds to several of the other researchers to get their help on the analysis. 4. They're submitting applications for two additional grants to help with further research. Current status of work units: World Community Grid's work for this project is currently paused while the researchers decide on new targets for us to crunch. There are a small number of work units currently out with volunteers. |

Thanks for the update, Caaiti. I particularly like the bit about limited toxicity, because that has been a problem with cancer treatments.

Thanks for the update, looking forward to continue crunching for SCC and start on OPN when it comes out!

We had our June call with the researchers this evening.
1. They've started analysis for data on a target called osteopontin (SPP1) that has already been run on World Community Grid. 2. Regarding the two grant applications mentioned in last month's update, they're still waiting on decisions. (Many grant makers are prioritizing COVID-19 research and other work is a lesser priority.) 3. They've decided on one of the future targets for World Community Grid to crunch, and have submitted a budget to study it. One of the researchers is waiting for grant money (separate from the two grants mentioned above) to make sure they can study this target. Once the funding has been approved, we'll announce the name of the target and the researchers will begin pre-grid work. No ETA on when this work will be done--timelines are very difficult to predict these days due to COVID-19 and widespread civil unrest. 4. The group is usually involved in a conference called SIOP Asia, which may be web-based this year in September. 5. There was a discussion about how to ensure that they have the resources to do further analysis and testing based on the data they get from WCG in the future. While the project is paused, we'll continue having monthly calls with the research team. |
