Hi brettrob - WU = Work Unit
----------------------------------------Simple, when you know - but, unless and until you've come across that term before (i.e., as someone who's new to WCG/the forum - just like we all were, at some point), it's just another of those terminologies that can be confusing. ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by gb009761 at May 1, 2017 1:16:13 PM] |

Is the present WCG staff going to be affected by this? Is IBM laying off or transferring any of our beloved WCG staff? I hope that this just means they can focus on other things. Moving to the IBM Cloud has no effect on the current World Community Grid staff.Cheers ![]() |

Some people stop reading when they have a reactive urge, instead of continuing to the end of a thread to see if the query/point, in this case WU question, was already answered, so we get duplication.
----------------------------------------Anyway just now, on the topic of cloud, hope these become an log event of the past: "40010 World Community Grid 5/2/2017 12:17:07 PM Message from server: We are currently experiencing high load and are temporarily deferring your scheduler request. Your client will automatically try again later." Does not seem there's an FAHV shorts avalanche momentarily, so no guess what the cause is.. maybe one... Monday was comparatively low, as knock on from Sunday work supply issues... maybe another reporting/validation wave. Have a nice day [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 2, 2017 10:26:49 AM] |

Monday was comparatively low, as knock on from Sunday work supply issues... maybe another reporting/validation wave. Have a nice day & some need to comment every opportunity they can, even though it's not their business! For the 2nd bold, that's not "on topic". As we seen lately that similar things were happening in many projects: - https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,39873_offset,40 - https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg...ead,39945_offset,0#542899 - https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,39900_offset,60 - https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg...d_thread,38937_offset,640 Why? Shortage in WUs has nothing to do with moving to cloud which starts on 15th of May. But it has to do more with Pentathlon on the ZIKA project & current equipment of the WCG (hence the move to IBM cloud), more than anything else. ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by KLiK at May 3, 2017 8:38:03 AM] |

Greetings,
----------------------------------------There have been some questions that have been asked about what this move will do for us in a little more detail than what we described in the news article. I'd like to fill you in on a little more detail. First - to set the stage for the discussion, it is worth remembering that World Community Grid launched in November of 2004. At that time, Facebook was not open to the public and the first iPhone was still 3 years in the future. Many of the technology tools that are in common use now did not exist then. That means that we had to build a lot of scripts, automation, monitoring and task management tools ourselves. These worked well at the time, but better alternatives exist now. In many ways, this transition from our current hosting environment to the new hosting environment has been about a massive payment on the technical debt that has accumulated over the years. This can be very unexciting in the near term from either a business or a end-user perspective, but it frees us to be able to start doing things more easily going forward. So what is changing?
Beyond this we have also moved our QA and tools infrastructure from server racks in Austin and Chicago into the IBM cloud as well. So this is a very exciting set of changes for the team, but it won't have an immediate impact on the volunteers. However, we will be in a position to handle much higher participation and we will be able to do more with what we have. These are very good things for the long term health of the program. I hope that this answers some of the questions and perhaps sets the expectation that the transition will be a success if you notice nothing different immediately after the migration :-) The change will start shortly after the mid-day stats finish on May 15th. thanks, Kevin [Edit 1 times, last edit by knreed at May 4, 2017 2:35:04 PM] |
