Picked up a Compaq nc8430 destined for the scrap heap at school last week. 2GB RAM, a Core 2 something rather (it's a laptop, so a Centrino series). Runs server 2012 like a champ. UNFORTUNATELY, it can no longer receive any sort of charge. With or without the battery, it doesn't respond to any power input. It's charger is a 65W @ 18V and 3.5amps. I've tried two of those to no avail. I've also tried a 19V @ 3.34amp charger, and the light blinks, so it can get some kind of power. I'm thinking it's a blown capacitor on the board.
----------------------------------------I'll be back at lunch Monday to continue taking it apart and see if that's the case. If so, RIP. But hey, free hard drive! Hopefully I can get it running on the Grid someday. If not then oh well! I've gotten two from there already chugging away. Fingers are crossed! ![]() |

Server 2012 on a laptop? Not sure why, but ok. I would throw linux on it and call it a day.
For the power issue, is the power input on the laptop loose perhaps? I have seen several laptops develop this with years of people plugging and unplugging, and most times people are careless about this and either break or loosen the power connector. Good luck with the resurrection. |

It may be loose, and that's mainly what I'm chcking out. As for Server over Ubuntu, I first put Ubuntu on it (the charging broke after 6 hours so I had time), and it idled VERY hot. (70-85 no lies). I put Server on and it idled at 40-45. I would use Linux but it's poorly optimized on this machine.

If and when it gets to the running stage...
The 8430 would use more power than a current Intel 6950x 12 core; with more than enough room to spare fully decking it out. |
