Optimum Specs

What's the optimum specs for a desktop systems running WCG 24/7 committed.
I've a Asus B85 board. Pentium G3258 @ 3.6Ghz, dual channel DDR3 @1400Mhz. Sandisk X400/ SATA 6GB SSD. GeForce 210 1GB memory. I'm returning on average 2000+ points per day. I assume a Quad core CPU would produce more results. Higher rated RAM. SSD RAID arrays an advantage?

Re: Optimum Specs

If you are after run time, more cores is better. If you get a quad core with hyperthreading, you could run 8 tasks at a time. I don't think any of the WCG sciences are too RAM heavy. I remember reading that some of the sciences have a lot of I/O, so a lot of writes to disk. When I set my computer up, I installed BOINC to my secondary drive which is a platter drive, just to keep the writes to the SSD at a minimum.

Re: Optimum Specs

- Ram doesn't mean much, higher rated RAM most likely doesn't do anything. Someone tested single/dual/quad channel and there was no benefit.
If you can, do dual channel since it can't hurt, but don't change to higher rated modules.

- Moving to an i3/i5/i7 will net you more points and much better efficiency.
High frequency (K) CPU-s are usually less efficient than low power ones, although this is not always the case. i7-s are best, not sure they are worth the price premium.

I tested a few different 1150 cpu-s:

G1840 - 1708 points/day - 29 points/watt
i3-4330 - 3761 points/day - 66 points/watt
i5-4430 - 4341 points/day - 77 points/watt
i7-4790k - 6448 points/day - 51 points/watt

- HDD speed doesn't matter at all. SSD-s are better in terms of power consumption. I usually use a dedicated very small (32-40GB) SSD/notebook HDD for crunching for efficiency reasons.

Re: Optimum Specs

Agree with above comments. Your weak spot is the CPU.
Rest of HW is fine for crunching. Change CPU will give you more points, more run time and more points-per-watt.
That is if you swap to a better CPU oc. biggrin

so here's your chip-set:
http://ark.intel.com/products/75019/Intel-DH82B85-PCH

here's a list of compatible processors:
http://ark.intel.com/products/75019/Intel-DH82B85-PCH#@compatibility

of those, I'd suggest:
1. choice Intel® Core™ i7-4785T Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.20 GHz) - 35W
2. choice Intel® Core™ i7-4790T Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.90 GHz) - 45W
3. choice Intel® Core™ i7-4790S Processor (8M Cache, up to 4.00 GHz) - 65W
depending if you want to be "power efficient" & lower your bills in the future...
all of those are 4c/8t CPUs, so you'll get up to 8days for you 1day (24/7) running...now, you got a processor which only does 2days of work, 'cause it's a 2c/2t
CPU!

also, if MBO has a VGA/DVI output...then you can use intel graphics, which also has a computing power with OpenCL in BOINC (projects like SETi@home or similar)!

or are you hunting for points? then you need to use suggestions from @fuzzydice55S!
wink

Re: Optimum Specs

I operated several years long hosts with SSD and now these hosts are running on HDD and I did not notice any significant efficiency differences (in the both configuration, the hosts have a computing efficiency > 99.x%).
The only significant difference is by booting up (not really relevant for 24/7/365 operation).
Beside the CPU (the larger embedded cache, the better for the CPU efficiency), the operating system has the most significant impact. For example (long terms average figures):
- AMD Phenom II x6 - 1055T - 2.8 GHz (6 threads) / Ubuntu 14.04 x64 = average 5'500 points/day
- AMD Phenom II x6 - 1090T - 3.0 GHz (6 threads) / Ubuntu 14.04 x64 = average 6'300 points/day
- Intel i7 4770K - 3.5 GHz (8 threads) / Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64 = average 5'350 points/day
- Intel i7 6700K - 4 GHz (8 threads) / LinuxMint 17.3 x64 = average 11'500 points/day
Unfortunately I am currently not able to test the i7 4770K with Linux but I assume that the machine would be more productive with it (probably >20% improvement).
Cheers,
Yves

Re: Optimum Specs

Hi there!

The specifications of your system overall are just fine for crunching, but you should be able to get a much better overclock on your G3258. For $30, you can buy a Hyper 212 EVO CPU cooler, and you should be able to achieve a 4.4-4.6GHz overclock on your processor with it, and still keep the voltage and temperatures perfectly reasonable. If you have a larger budget, the CPUs that KLiK mentioned are great choices, since your motherboard's chipset isn't one that works well when overclocking other "K" series CPUs.

Doing the math, your 2,000 points per day could probably increase to around 2,500-2,750 or so with a better overclock.

Happy crunching!

Kasey

Re: Optimum Specs

Thanks everyone....All your answers confirm what I thought. The current system is a recent replacement...I just build a low cost unit, keep it cool/clean and burnt it out for the next reincarnation. I might clock out some more though. If i ran WCG on my gaming system (i7 4790K @ 4GHz etc) I'd output an incredible amount.... Don't forget about GPU processing :) Quentin

@Qtech1
I run on my gaming system OC @4.2ghz I7 2600K
24/7 for 5 years (minus a couple moves)
All I do when I game is turn it down to 6 out of 8(HT) cores.
Don't notice any ill effects.
