Q9550 Cooling Solution

I have had a Q9550 CPU running for quite a while utilizing 2-3 cores based on ambient temperature since I have never gotten around to a better cooling solution. Now that summer is here, I find my PC crashing even using 1 core. The PC seems to crash randomly at CPU temps of 73C or above. The CPU tends to run at ~71C with 3 cores at full load with 70F ambient temperature.

The cooler I have on it is similar to this. My cooler has two copper heat pipes with aluminum fins and an 80mm fan (The case it is in only supports 80mm exhaust fans as well). I could get another heat sink with 4 heat pipes instead, such as this but will two additional heat pipes bring down my CPU temperature appreciably at full load? This Dynatron cooler has me interested with a maximum RPM of 5000 and a low profile. Only drawback would be its max 62dB noise level, but I'm not sure that the sound would bother me. Any suggestions?

On another note, I came home the other day to find my apartment at 94F and my AMD Phenom II 1055T six core PC at 100% load with a 120mm self contained liquid cooling system running just fine. Although I don't believe the CPU temperature sensor is functioning since it tells me 14C at idle. It was pushing around 60C with the 94F ambient temperature. I couldn't find an 80mm closed loop liquid cooling solution for my Q9550.

Re: Q9550 Cooling Solution

Hi there!

It sounds to me like the CPU temps may not be the cause of the crashes. CPUs, even ones as old as yours, are designed to run stably up to around 100*C (although obviously not great for the lifespan). I'm not that experienced (a hobbyist, at best), but it sounds like it might be a problem with some sort of external temperature sensor on your motherboard, possibly located away from the CPU, reading a temperature that's much higher than the actual one and causing the system to shut down. What mobo/BIOS are you running? When the system crashes, do you get errors/BSODs? If so, what do they say? Perhaps some answers to these questions will allow myself or someone to better assist you.

Happy crunching! smile

Re: Q9550 Cooling Solution

Maybe the RAM is defect?
Since I assume that the machine is about 8 or 9 years old, RAM could be the cause of the trouble.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: Q9550 Cooling Solution

Motherboard: Asus P5QL Pro with AMI Bios, Mobo battery is dead
RAM: 4x2GB sticks with heatsinks *The RAM does run rather warm.
Video: EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti
Windows 10 x64

This PC is used as a HTPC hooked up to a TV. I'm not sure of the errors when it crashes while the screen is off (turning the TV on after it crashes yields a blank screen). On the rare occasion it does crash in use, I will get a blue screen with an IRQL not less or equal error - when the computer was Windows 7. The Windows 10 blue screen doesn't show specifics. When I use the PC, I leave BOINC running which includes GPU computing. I always attributed it to watching video while GPU computing with CPU heat playing a role. The video card temp while computing is around 60C.

Looking over the Windows logs, the errors appear random:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is about 50% of the bug errors
SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Caused by driver is random too:
tcpip.sys
cng.sys
ntoskrnl.exe
dxgmms2.sys
fwpkcint.sys
nvlddmkm.sys
L1E62x64.sys (Atheros driver)

Crash address nine times out of ten was ntoskrnl.exe, the other time was nvlddmkm.sys.

Perhaps your northbridge chip is over heating.. it was a problem with my system

I run very similar CPUs at home: X3360...so mine run with 4 cores at about 70-75°C!
my ambient temp these days go from 15-25°C (open windows in house)...check here: http://www.accuweather.com/en/hr/zagreb/117910/weather-forecast/117910

so I'd suggest:
1. remove heat-sink to wipe thermal paste & apply a new one!
2. test your RAM with ISO bootable version, takes about 1h for 8GB on your board with DDR2
a) http://www.memtest.org/
b) http://www.memtest86.com/download.htm
if everything is OK, then
3. install TThrottle to keep crunching on 100%, while throttling down your science...it can also manage your video card: http://efmer.com/b/?q=tthrottle_download_version
it will manage your PC in the upcoming heat! wink
4. a possibility of investing in Q9550S might also be an option...got mine for $85 few months ago! wink

Re: Q9550 Cooling Solution

A 95W CPU and a 60W GPU crunching in a small HTPC case is a bad idea.
Unless your current HTPC case has very good airflow... most of the time they don't.

Most likely you have hot air stuck inside the case, so the north bridge or something else overheats.

If possible, move to a tower case. A single 12cm fan would be enough to remove all the generated heat.

I tested an i3-4330 in a HTPC case w/ 2 fans, it ran at 80C and kept climbing. In a normal ATX case, max temperature was 60C with a single exhaust fan.

Re: Q9550 Cooling Solution

I would say I have a normal sized tower case (not full). It has small cutouts in the side of the front face for air intake as well as an 80mm fan side mount. The only other fan mounts are on the rear - 2x 80mm. The case does seem to have poor air flow. I felt around while the computer was on and didn't find the north bridge to be hot. I was actually considering a better air flow case - this may be the solution I go with.

Edit: I use TThrottle on all my PCs for CPU/GPU temperature monitoring. I just gave HWMonitor a try and see the max value for "CPUTIN" as 102C with a current value of 48C. It doesn't seem to correlate with the temperatures shown below in the same screen for Cores 1-4 of the processor.

Re: Q9550 Cooling Solution

btw, I'm using OEM intel coolers with my X3360 & Q9550S... ;)
