Re: The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 Temporarily Paused

Will the new WUs checkpoint more quickly/often? I'm not running any 24/7 machines but have been hoping to contribute since I joined WCG.

Not from the information available. All the BETA's were to test fixes, not change the checkpointing feature.

Re: The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 Temporarily Paused

I believe in this project but I was hoping that the length of time to get to the first checkpoint would be one of the issues being addressed in the beta tests. I am sure that I am not the only CEP2 volunteer who has an issue with the amount of time til the first checkpoint is reached. If the lengthy checkpoint issue is not addressed, then the level of participation in the project will suffer.

Surely another checkpoint can be inserted into the workunit or make each workunit smaller.

There was a post some years ago which explained in some detail why the first checkpoint took so long. I don't remember the details, but if the scientists could make it any shorter, I am pretty sure they would have by now. The size of the workunits is dependent on the size of the molecule being studied. They have worked on only releasing to the project those molecules small enough to be done on most PC's. A few of the bigger ones have leaked through which have exceeded the 18 hour time limit (and thus did not finish). The larger molecules are run on their cluster at Harvard.
Cheers

That is quite right. I have been here from the beginning, and various problems (including the very high disk write rate - hard on SSDs) were noted all along. That is the way the calculations work; they are not the usual ones, and had to be developed along with the science specifically for this study. And that is why it is the only project at WCG that allows you to choose how many work units you can have downloaded at one time. You need to understand the hardware limitations before you can crunch it successfully. Having a machine that is on 24/7 helps too.

Bring it back and I'll turn on my RAM DISK again :D
Would love to get 5 or 10 years on this project...
would love cheaper solar too while we are at it

Re: The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 Temporarily Paused

Besides believing in the "green" aspects of this project, I am 60 days shy of my 20 year badge in this project.

I am currently crunching Mapping Cancers Markers but this project is nearing completion.

I hope we do not have to wait long for the resumption of CEP2. Is there a target date available?

Re: The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 Temporarily Paused

Greetings all,

We are resuming some computations for The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2. The first batch will only have 1,000 results. This will be like an extended beta test. We are planning on increase the number of results to 43,000 and will get these results back to the researchers for them to investigate and review before providing more batches.

Thanks,
-Uplinger

Re: The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 Temporarily Paused

Many will surely have liked this 'extended Beta' to run through the 'Beta pipeline' cool . You don't say, but what version of app are you employing for this elongated trial?
