Even though my primary Phone OS is WP, I think iOS users need a BOINC client that can run the (only?) supported project on here, OET. The RAM and processor requirements are definitely there. What do you all think?

I would not run BOINC on my iOS devices.

What do you all think? there has been many topics on it here: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=73380#1445967 http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=2303 http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=67236#1205622 to conclude: there's a problem with Apple Store to have an App which downloads exec files...so BOINC has failed on that! is there a solution: yes, there is! I've recommended here on WCG to make an Apple Store app with all exec included in version of BOINC...so there's a way around it! but, there also nobody willing to do it...to compile an iOS app with all executable files! down side of that is: every time any scientist make some new exec software, you have to upgrade a whole app in Apple store...but, that's not such a problem, just a lot of bandwidth! |

What do you all think? There is no iOS port of BOINC [legal issues, which are conceptually so difficult to resolve that no effort is put into fighting with the Jobs legacy. Berkeley is your place to discuss this, but put your armor on before you do and open the can again] |

I would not run BOINC on my iOS devices. Besides the answer that Rob has given, why would you not run BOINC on your iOS devices if it were available? (just curious ) CJSL Crunching for a brighter future... |

I've looked at the milky way app🚤, but the Cydia source no longer exists. The fact that the standalone app downloader leading to an App Store rejection should in fact be removed from their policy, but on WP, it theoretically would be simpler to make a boinc app (C#, or whatever language it uses). WP apps sometimes download updates within the app and not the store. Hmm...

Due to the licensing restrictions, each of the projects might have to package their own apps. But, BOINC could assist in providing a shell/wrapper ready to go (just add application, and upload to the store) and integrate with the project's existing BOINC infrastructure.

(just curious ) CJSL Crunching for a brighter future... Because I don't think the pocket computers (so called Smartphones) nor tablets are capable to run such computing. I don't care if I (or especially anyone else) burn down the 1-euro (or even more expensive) android device, but I will not risk burning down an iOS device. Even an old iPhone 4, for which I can still get ca. 50 Euros if I take a decision to sell it. Cheers ETA: regarding Apple restrictions. Jailbroken iOS devices would definitely be able to run BOINC. So, why there is (still) not an agent for them? Methinks it is due to: (1) iOS devices are created to run the things for what they were created and they are not capable to run such extensive copmuping, or (2) Jailbreak community is not interested in any charity programs (only in stealing the applications), or (3) the creators of Jailbreaks are not interested in such charity programs (only in stealing of data from Jailbroken devices) ETA2: All in all, I am not going to Jailbreal my iOS devices even if this will allow them to run BOINC. I like them as they are, how they work and how they perform. Cheers 2 Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. well I would crunch on my iPhone or iPad...
----------------------------------------but I'd also like that BOINC be set with throttling, like on Android devices...so we don't burn our phones, while charging! |
