Re: New projects....next phase?

Wow...makes for a nice, warm, fuzzy future now that WCG is/is about to be a year old.

Curious, I presume the current points/rankings/etc. will not reset with new projects? May be interesting for teams depending on how they choose amongst projects too. Could be some membership shuffling there. With multiple projects running, will there be some sort of weighting of each project to keep a set amount of computing time equivalent across projects? If you let the server choose, does it stay with the same project once it makes a choice or will it switch among projects as WU are returned? confused

Re: New projects....next phase?

Since WCG started out with the same software as grid.org, I would say that points just pile up as usual, regardless of which project you may be working on. Points is points. Parts is parts. There will be global statistics split out by project, but I don't think the split is captured for members and teams, unless WCG would be doing something new.

Re: New projects....next phase?

Points/Rankings will keep growing and will not be reset when we start a new project.

Re: New projects....next phase?

Yes, the Advisory Board met on 9/26. They approved the HIV/Aids project and phase II of the Human Proteome Folding project. We have been asked to hold off on getting out details of the HIV/Aids project until we get closer to the launch date, which we expect to be on October 31, 2005. Phase II of Human Proteome Folding is scheduled to start in December of 2005. Rich Bonneau also provided information about the Human Proteome Folding project. In particular he introduced the start of the results database that will be available to scientists and also mentioned the first papers that he’s writing on the project.

In addition to the above, the Advisory Board received information about the state of the project... number of members, devices, proposals for new research (1 cancer and one disease pandemic modeling). We also asked the Advisory Board for their continued assistance in spreading the word about World Community Grid to research organizations and they agreed to do that.

Re: New projects....next phase?

Thanks for the info bbover3 - so we will have a choice between HPF phase II and HIV. Both good causes smile

I must admit that I'm am just a little disappointed that something cancer related isn't an option at this time. This seems to be a very popular subject across the DC community as a whole. Although it sounds as though it won't be too long before we do have such an option . . . .

Being a cancer survivor myself, I would like to see a cancer project right away, but looks like it won't be long. I can't imagine the impact that the HIV/AIDS project will have on world health! Great picks. My contrats to the advisory board!

VAIO GRX616, my sentiment lies with your post. Our Team at the UD Grid, is immersed with many Team Mates who have suffered this insidous disease called Cancer.

Either they, or Family Members or Friends. Our Team there continues to solidly grow there, despite the recent or past problems. Only time will tell when the UD Grid will introduce the new Cancer work units.

I think it will be short period, and some/many of us will have to re-prioritize our DC efforts.

Re: New projects....next phase?

We have a cancer project in the review process and we have targeted it for launch in the first quarter of 2006.

As far as doing more cancer projects... We have done a lot of work to ensure that the research community is aware of World Community Grid, and continue to do so. We are even spending time with a few researchers to teach them how to design research to run on the grid. But we can’t drag them in the door. We have to wait until researchers submit proposals from https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/submit_a_proposal.html

If you are reading and responding in this forum, and have a personal interest in helping to eradicate a certain disease, then you can help out.

We would like to invite anyone reading this thread, whether you have been affected by some kind of heinous disease or not, to take it upon yourself to contact one or more research organization that is doing research on that disease. In your message to them, point them to the World Community Grid submit-a-proposal page, and encourage them to take advantage of World Community Grid by submitting a proposal.

Why should a research organization pay tons of money for hardware/software when they can run on World Community Grid? All of our PCs combined now make World Community Grid one of the largest super computers in the world. So we should be able to take on any kind of research.

Re: New projects....next phase?

I do hope that the cancer project indeed goes ahead in the first quarter of next year, if not sooner.

I have every confidence that a cancer project will be greatly supported by the membership and add to the WCG's profile.

Hopefully a substantial increase in WCG membership will be acquired by the project.

I look forward to reading further details.

I am going to start looking into possible proposal candidates in the field of cancer research and hopefully, in time, the WCG portfolio will be burgeoning with important research projects.

One can but try.

Thank you for the feedback......we the worker ants appreciate being kept in the loop.
