Forum Signature Options & Forum Policy

In another thread that is now locked, a WCG staff member has indicated a preference for no team information to be mentioned in signatures outside of the Team's own recruiting thread.

If this is a requirement, then I am happy to do this, but there is no option for appending signatures in specific posts, I would like to request that this feature be added.

As the member in question was one of the WCG Techs I would like some clarification about whether this point was made as a representation on behalf of the views of WCG as the rules are clearly ambiguous on this point.

This point comes from a reference I made to the rules about team recruiting in order to help clear up an issue that had escalated into an argument. My attempt to do so was just to clarify the matter, however I was informed that my will to help out was just taking the rules too seriously and that if I want to do so then I should remove all team references from my signature.

Surely the purpose of the forum rules are to add a framework of allowed behaviour. If I'm going to be shouted down for referencing them to help resolve an argument can I also suggest that the 'Forum Policy' thread is retitled to something less "constructionist", such as 'Forum Guidelines' or 'Forum Suggestions', as this clearly fits in better with the opinions given by those representing WCG.

(This isn't intended as a rebuke, as that is also against the rules d oh, I'm just after some clarification)

Re: Forum Signature Options & Forum Policy

I'll second all that Gordamo says! If sigs that mention the team you are a member of are not allowed then almost everyone of us is in breach of this rule. Also, unlike many other forums, the ability to choose if your sig appears or not isn't available here.

Actually Matt I don't think he did "indicate that preference":

Frankly, I feel that every time someone posts in a thread with a team advertisement in their signature, it could be construed as recruiting for that team. If you want to take such a constructionist view of the forum rules, then please remove any advertisement for your (or any other) team from your signature.

However, I believe that signatures add personality to the forums and to posters in the forums. The Admins and Techs let it go because it's better for the forums.

I added the bold bits smile

It seems to me that nelsoc, our resident swear filter god bless him wink , was merely stating that others could misconstrue signatures. I don't happen to agree with this point of view as I don't know of anyone who has complained about signatures per se.

BTW I'm glad the other thread was locked; it was deteriorating almost to the point of petty name-calling - a little silly for us grown-ups. At least we're supposed to be . . . . . smile

Re: Forum Signature Options & Forum Policy

As a public service, I post my broken signature, devoid of ANYTHING remotely indicative of any team except the "whites" and the "grays", depending on which alternating background is used. I am reloading some webpages, and all graphics and redirects are not yet present.

It may fix itself later, or may not, but some not wishing to see any "team" information in my SIG might prefer this presentation. Shouldn't every SIG look like this?

Right, VAIO GRX616.

I think that nelsoc was saying 'Don't sweat the small stuff' in much more elegant phrasing. All the Team sigs with Team signup URLs all over the Forum indicate that the rule 'Please do not recruit members outside of the Team Forum' at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=forum#17 is intended to be understood in a common sense sort of way rather than in an extremely rigorous fashion.

Re: Forum Signature Options & Forum Policy

I'm happy to see that one person (thank you VAIO GRX616) read my whole post.

I was merely trying to point out that the whole "strict rule enforcement" of team recruiting isn't really worth the time it takes to do. If there are blatant violations of the rules, don't worry, we'll kick some butt. While we haven't actually done it, we do have the ability to ban members from the forums.

If you see something that appears to be a violation of the rules, please bring it to the attention of the admins. We may not be able to respond immediately (nor necessarily respond in the manner you hoped for when bringing it to our attention), but any issues will be looked at.

Re: Forum Signature Options & Forum Policy

grid.org takes the view that team things are permitted in the sig. If you want to say something else about team recruiting, that should be done in a team recruiting thread.

SIGs should not be used in threads in which they are specifically prohibited...like maintaining compactness in game threads.

Fair enough. I admit that I may have overreacted a little. However, I was trying to use the structure set forth by WCG to help diffuse an escalating situation which had not yet been handled by any admins and felt that I had had my reconsiliation efforts thrown back in my face.

I did read your post a number of times, but I couldn't see it saying anything other than the fact that the forum policy should not be taken seriously in this case when the requirements are there in black and white. I had not realised that this was the way they should be taken as such policies are taken more seriously on other similar forums.

I also appreciate your response mycroft, that these rules should only be an indication of common sense practices, however these were being taken more than literally by the whole post in question. All I did was reference the rule in question to show that there was no real issue here.

Given that the "Policy" is clearly open to a significant amount of personal interpretation, ambiguity and flexibility, I'll shut up now and leave any other such issues to the Admins.
